Why do we like what we like?

Why do we like the things we like? Why do some people like one type of music and others don't? Why do people like certain activities and others don't?

here is a good point - i will share soon, planning to, on health area -
the food we like is primarily psychological - what feeling we had when we had a particular food. .
very useful info (unlike 99.9999999% of the rest. . true dat.)
i knew when i learned - i had already developed very healthy habits of eating, yet this helped pick up the slack, so to speak.
so going from there, primarily association with good or bad feelings - quantum entanglement, etc.
i recommend gradual growth into more lovely forms, etc.

I would guess there are both genetic and cultural factors, and that each of which plays a major role. Without the genetic factor, you would have no tastes or proclivities, and without the cultural factor you would just have nothing. Different cultures are interested in totally different things. I would say at a baseline level genetics is probably the driver of most of our tastes.

Somehow I doubt that is all there is to it. How come different family members have different tastes?

Dear Cez-
Do you know I remember exactly what you wrote when you gave me five stars?
I also remember all our interactions, every word we said.
I remember the time you wrote a post, then deleted it quickly,
and I wrote just after - I was probably the only one who saw it.
We all have perfect memory - that's only one of our traits.
We also can overcome any conditioning -
We choose our entire life-times.
Now I will say cya.

in short - you are not a robot - you choose who you are, what you are - what you like, etc.
We're fighting a meme war (with infinite levels).
Join the winning side.
Peace and perfect health.

Different influences hit them at the right time
I blame social conditioning for everything we are. There's nothing inherent in anyone imo.

You're partly right. Genetics are not determinant - barely, they are. Everything is inherent in everyone, though. Half-right.

individuals decide what to believe but there is a certain level of conditioning in the design. i could be wrong but hey, can you prove it?

I agree with the essence of what you're saying but I think we are robots and it's up to us to struggle against the conditioning that has been imprinted upon us if we want to be "free."
To think you are free already is to fool yourself imo. Some people might have been raised in proper conditions so that they naturally are free, but for most of us I think it's a moment-to-moment struggle that lasts for years.

free already? peace bro. Love too.
yes we are free - always. You can walk anywhere. . . Letting go of social pressures is the way to be free of them -
yep, I know those pressures are heavier on some people and in some families - I've seen that. Lots of times. But they are free too, if they wished - their parents just hold them to a certain ideal, a form, and they get crushed under the weight -
at any point they could step outside of their conditioning - if they so chose.
As far as struggle - yes, I know how tough this life can be, and so I share Kornfield's view -
'Life is so hard, how can we be anything but kind?'
Then it can be so easy.
A fish eagle hunts only ten minutes a day. . . I forgot where I was going with that but ya, good stuff.

ah - you helped me remember, friend.
Ya, as Nouwen put it - this world is only evil if we are a slave to it. Why is a fish eagle happy, but a human unhappy? Who would say the human is higher / than an eagle?
We create it - individually and collectively;
Also - about poverty or rich / the poor are divine, honored, sacred - in my view at least, and the rich - are generally on a downward spiral .. .
growth and decay. . . eternal and natural way of human behavior - when there's peace, there will be peace.
etc.

Notice how a rich person's sons are generally spoiled - etc. . . and poor people don't take the simple stuff for granted.
It's a rather universal and almost eternal thing. . . I recommend reading Siddhartha; although I wish I could mention a good translator, I don't know which one is best for that one.
There will be peace one day.

I had a predilection this could become a free-will debate.
That's been done to its natural conclusion - anyway to me it's fairly simple: we do not live in a deterministic universe - there is randomness at the quantum level - and that is the basis of everything.
If you have a quantum brain. . . which you do. . . etc.
As Icelander said, a completely pointless discussion.

Look, free will has nothing to do with it. You do not choose what you like, or even what you like to believe. The brain doesn't have to be deterministic for this to be the case. It's genetics and culture. You may be able to choose within the types of things you're interested in. But you do not choose your tastes any more than you choose your face.
