Long time musician needs help getting into electronic/synth

I've been in love with music since I can remember, and have played piano and guitar since I was about 4 years old.  Recently I've been fascinated by electronic music from artists like fischerspooner, moby, shpongle, infected mushroom, etc.  I went up to san francisco this weekend and was completely inspired by a mushroom trip (which i'll post up later) and decided to invest some serious money in equipment to begin making this stuff.  I don't really know enough about electronic music equipment to throw 600 bills at a sequencer/sampler, for example, without some input from you guys.  I am a very good musician, and I know I'll be able to learn the geometry of a synthesizer relatively quickly.  I want to spend around 1500 to 1700 dollars total.  Tentatively, I was thinking about getting a drum machine, a synthesizer, and a sequencer/sampler.  Essentially, I want equipment that will give me enough freedom to make experimental music, play around with as many aspects of sound as my brain can handle, and relate them to eachother.  But I also want the equipment to be accessible enough where I can transfer a song in my head into the equipment without too much change, does that make sense?  My only worry is, once I have all this stuff, I'll never leave my room again :lol:  So for those of you that have experience with this, help out a newb! thanks

hardware samplers and sequencers are nearly obsolete,
if you have a moderately fast computer.

if you only have a few grand to spend,
it would be wise to buy a nice Audio/MIDI interface,
like the Digidesign DIGI 002 Firewire Audio Interface / MIDI DAW Control Surface.

and get a stacked MIDI keyboard controller,
like the M-Audio Oxygen, it has tons of pads, knobs and faders...
and get a 120+GB 7200+RPM Hard Drive for dedicated digital recording.

honestly, you don't really need the Audio Interface @ first,
just a MIDI controller keyboard, and some good synth / samp programs like:
Reason 2.5, Absynth 2, Kontakt, Battery, FM7, Vokator, Pro 53, Plex, XPhase, Halion 2 etc.
some say warez suck; but imo the next generation of 32 bit Virtual Instruments ROCK.

then get a good MIDI Sequencer / Digital Audio Workstation to control and record your soft synths / samp.
i.e. Cubase SX, Nuendo, Logic 6, Digital Performer 4, or Pro Tools 6.
these programs can do more than any hardware sequencer dreams of.
not to mention the DSP (fx) plug-ins...

...just my too sense.

i'd start with fruityloops 4. moderately easy to use and nice sounding. has your sequencer, samplers, etc. so you can get started right away.

You could also get something like a Roland Dr. Sample for around $200 and maybe some phantom powered condenser mikes for a real simple start. Then you can record any sound in your environment or that you can create with relatively great quality, and throw mad effects on it if you want. Record different samples or whatever, overlay em, throw on some weird vox, guitar or maybe some hand drums with delay. You'd be amazed at what a simple pitch shifter can do to warp percussive sounds into a fantastically warped melody.

A big question would be is your approach digital oriented, ie: programmed beats and prefab sound, or do you want a more organic "performance" oriented approach. The best thing is probably a combination of the two. In my experience it's good to have a simple way to record sounds without getting a computer involved, but it's also really useful to have a computer setup. Even if it's real basic at first. Like say using Goldwave to piece samples or sequences together. Or fruity loops to blend some recorded stuff into an organized song.

Basically, experimentation is where it's at. It's fine to be a little lost. Who knows, you might discover awesome sounds by combining equipment that wasn't really designed to be used together. Your creative spark will begin to tune into whatever equipment you choose.Have fun man! Not many things make life worth living quite like music!

With a good MIDI controller (A few have already been mentioned), a decent computer/soundcard (RAM is important when it comes to working with music on a computer), recording program of some sort, (I use Cool Edit Pro 2 mainly) and a decent synth, you have most anything you'd need for a while. I have my compy and a Korg KARMA and I haven't even begun to touch all the possibilities. Fruity Loops is great too, I have FL Studio and I like to use it for precision. You program a beat and you *know* it'll alwayz be on time, for example. Programming beats and realtime recording with a synth works well. I'm sure you could get all that for under $1,500. FL Studio is like $100, CEP2 is...I'm not sure, $200-300, I believe...the MIDI controllers are like $150. That leaves a good chunk of change for 1 pretty good synth or maybe a couple smaller ones.  Anywayz, that's my $.02, good luck no matter what you do. The world of music is vast and wonderful. :smile:

Someone (I cant remember who) has a virus softsynth now also, which is a major synth used in newer electronica.

A fast AMD with a lot of RAM and a big hard disk.
SB Live! soundcard with kx drivers (www.kxproject.com)
Cubase SX with loooots of VST plugins (synths, samplers, drum machines, delays, filters, etc)
Some wave editor like Cool Edit Pro or Sound Forge
A knob controller like the Phat Boy
And a good Keyboard Controller.
