how long for a liquid culture

How long does it take for a liquid culture that consists of malt extract take before you see signs of growth? And what do contams look like in the liquid?

When I tried malt (light malt) it just caramelised. But if it were to op, I'd guess a week to a fortnight.

I know dextrose, dextrose with potato water, and dried corn syrup, is slower than honey -- tried them too. For what it's worth, I prefer eucalyptus honey, it takes the PC'ing and stays free of precipitation.

I usually let mine go for 3-6 days and it colonizes quite well.
