Karma...say what?
    #2220476 -

The only type of karma that I believe in is instant karma...it works like this,

People who give respect, get respect...

and

People who are genuinely friendly, have genuine friends....

Follow? Nothing magical happening there, just reciprocation.

Now, the type of karma that I don't believe in is the type that prescribes malelovant forces of retribution to pull strings, thus fucking over bad people.

One problem is that it starts a vicious cycle. I was Hitler in a past life, so my punishment is to be reborn under the brutal regime of Saddam Hussein. I am brutally tortured and my tongue is cut off. I am deeply spited and I am driven to murder an Iraqi family. I am once again reborn into shitty conditions as punishment, but these conditions aggrivate me to more atrocious crimes...

Another problem is that Karma is observed subjectivley and ad hoc. It was said in another thread that stealing from a corporation will create bad karma. Who is to say that the act of theft was not karma retributing the evil corporation?

Karma works in the long term as well... something I did as a child can come back and bite me later in life... no 'forces of retribution' at work here... just the way things are.

True, I forgot about those instances.

My point was that you reap what you sow.

Precisely.

Karma is the universe balancing itself, nothing more. There is no punishment or retribution...Just learning. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction, and what goes around comes around, and what comes up must come down. As above, so below, ad infinitum ad naseum.

If you go around pissing people off and being an asshole, eventually you will see what it feels like on the other side. That's karma. If you go around spreading love and joy to everyone you see, eventually you will feel that same love and joy right back at you. That's karma. Karma is not a system of punishment, developed by the church. Karma is a system of balance, created by the universe.

I think confusion stems from abusing the term Karma, though. It's used in a way that implies some sort of mysterious retribution. Why use the word at all if indeed it is just balancing.

  This reminds me of a poem I wrote a while back... I have posted it before, but it applies, so here goes:

Karma is baggage.
Good, evil, it matters not.
Baggage is baggage.

SpecialEd said:

So where was the first imbalance? I am going to say that the act of theft was a retribution, that doesn't make the theft any less evil. So karma is balancing the evilness of the corporation by having it robbed, the theif is still creating an imbalance in his life. and that imbalance will be corrected by karma. So where was the first imbalance? What set the universe offbalance forcing it to euqalize?

A better question: What will create balance once more? Is there anything that will stop the waves?

Yea..the "instant" kind of karma that many people often refer to, isn't KARMA. Thats logic.
Treat others good, you'll be treated good in return.
Treat others like shit, you're gonna get treated like shit back .

Although it often seems like "Nice guys always lose first" or something like that...and all the "assholes get the chicks", but..thats where I suppose Karma may be playing.

karma as i believe it: action and reaction, cause and effect. you reap what you sow.

it's not some mystical force that makes me fall down the stairs for stealing a toothbrush.

Right, karma = action. If something happened it was a result of your own action. Karma and action can be interchangable but the point is it's baggage.

what are you guys talking about baggage? do you mean:

your actions are like your baggage that yoou lug around with you. if your actions are crewl, crewlty will follow you?

what about ppl who travel light? I am usually pretty shy with strangers, dont communicate much, and I dont get much communication back either.

is this what you mean|?
