I think karma exists but not in the way most people think.
Hence my comment that we cannot even agree on a definition. It is like soul or God - everyone has their own notion.
I did a thread years ago on how much money, time and aggravation it cost me to help two different stranded motorists. Never again. No kindness was returned. I could give many, many examples.
Yeah I understand that, and perhaps it didn't benefit you directly. But perhaps those people you helped will think twice the next time they see someone stranded at the side of the road. It's a cycle.

No, it cost me almost a thousand dollars to be a Good Samaritan'. My heart is warmed that these idiots may or may not have 'helped' someone else out there somewhere someday.

Then why did you do it?

So says the author!
I don't know what to believe and am more interested in the 'violet flame.' Or transmuting the negativity that might come back to you.

Marukai said: What do you all think about giving money to pan handlers every once in a while as a means to balance bad deeds that you did in the past? What about giving things to the Salvation Army or Goodwill? How does one balance Karma, so that it doesn't bite you in the ass later on in life?
There's nothing mystical about karma in a special way. It is only mystical because the relationships and physics are so involved that it's not possible to grok it all. And there's the quantum randomness to further complicate things.
Let's say you did something to offend someone in an extreme way. Years later you've become a priest, given all your money to charity, and spend your free time helping out at a nursing home. The dude finally catches up with you and still feels inclined to beat the shit out of you and extract all your teeth. He may or may not appreciate the changes you've made regardless of whether the changes are inner or outer.
Following the dharma does not lend itself to having ulterior motives (escaping retribution from the past). Trying to rid ones self of karma is just another expression of karma.

it's all too abstract, the panhandler is like a broken toy - you give because you empathize and have the coin. there is no other layer to this.
to imagine another layer means you also are also a broken toy; but not one seeking a coin - the break is deeper
looking at that is from where your compassion comes
