updated Armillaria find

hey everyone i got a positive ID a few days ago on these guys (Armillaria Mellea), but i guess the post got lost somewhere during all the changes latley. I found these guys starting to grow in my backyard in southern california. Anyways just thought i'd post a few pictures of these guys a little, or i guess a lot, more mature then the previouse post. They look too cool not to share!! Happy trails.

Those are much better photos than the last batch, anyway. Those photos make the ID relatively easy.

You might want to check out this key to the North American species of Armillaria. It should help you to determine exactly which of the Armillaria mellea group of species you have.

Incidentally, the Armillarias of North America are edible. Make sure you cook them thoroughly. Also, if you haven't eaten them before, eat only a small amount the first time, and wait overnight before eating more (to make sure you don't get sick).

Spit gave me some of his find, blanched them for a minute, sauteed them in some butter, with a touch of lemon juice, and some shallots and parsley.

One of my favorite mushrooms, they are absolutely delicious.

Do you like them toxicman?

i'm glad to hear that they where enjoyed. they realy are good edibles, when prepeared properly. i find them by the thousands and more every year further north. as far up as the chico/red bluff area in california they are everywhere, as that area used to be heavily tree'd [mostly various oaks, but also many other species] so there is a very large volume of burried wood with more trees being planted and cut down all the time.

Yes, I do like Honey Mushrooms. Fortunately, they grow in huge numbers here. There are a few places I have found where, when conditions are right, there are more of them than you can actually use.

Also, the ones we have here aren't slimy, as I here many of them are.

TM, you need to come visit california sometime. there are at least a dozen sights i frequent where there are almost always more than i can use :smile:

very few other people seem to bother hunting them in these areas, so if i don't, uhm... *unburden the ground from some of thier great weight* they will just go to rot. heh.
