armillarea is the genus of this mushrooms , you can see the white spores deposit in top of the cap of all mushrooms, once i stare looking how the spores flow on the air , was increible, not many mushrooms produce so much spores , is armillarea mellea because of the ring it have in the stem is a real good edible but some people have allergic reation, so eat few first, just in case you want to eat it. grow always on stump and log.

Because they were found in California, they are most likely to be Armillaria ostoyae. A. mellea is primarily found in the southeast on hardwoods. Tom Volk has an excellent key here.
The most important thing if you're considering eating them is to be sure you thoroughly cook them. If they are at all undercooked they are poisonous. If you have any doubt if they are thoroughly cooked, then they aren't. The other thing to watch for is that it is possible that they are poisonous if growing from hemlock.

it's kind of confusing, there are hemlock trees (more correctly called tsugas) that are a kind of conifer unrelated to the hemlocks of Socratic fame ~ the poisonous herbaceous flowering plants.
tsuga (tree): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsuga
conium (herbaceous, poisonous plants) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conium
i have no idea about the toxicity of mushrooms growing from hemlock (tsuga) trees...but it's possible.

Good point. Since Armillarias grow from wood, I'm sure that they meant the tsugas. I would be extremely astonished to see Honey Mushrooms growing from a regular hemlock plant.
