do you think any neat mushrooms would be in PA around this time, sorry if this breaks the forum rules, but i think im gonna go hunt this week. im doing spore prints of these, more just to see how spore prints work.

Any idea about what species of Armillaria? I have found this mushroom in quantity this year however didn't feel comfortable eating any due to bit of uncertainty about species (and a plentiful supply of Grifola frondosa to distract me)
I?m inclined to think of A. straminea or A. caligatum
What was the habitat? specifically what kind of trees were nearest by and out of curiosity were they healthy trees? perhaps dead? The mushroom I find which very closely resembles these is usually around large diameter maple trees that are on the cusp of giving up the ghost.

georgeM, A. straminea and A. caligatum are no longer in the genus Armillaria. Depending on who you ask they are in Tricholoma or Floccularia (and probably somebody could come up with yet another genus some professionals place them in).

On the other hand, the mushrooms in deathing's photos are in the genus Armillaria.

thanks, and for other individual, they were mainly around two very sick tree stumps with lots of thick fungus growing on them. they spread to two average trees. moist, leaves, not too much grass.

Should be some good edibles still out there.. Might want to check out some research on that if you are interested - I would suggest looking for oysters, laccarias, honey mushrooms, chicken of the woods, hericium, etc.
