I need a lil info about stretching peres grafts
    #21828189 - 06/19/15 01:33 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

I've recently moved a large number of my grafts out of their humidity container. Most that had leaves have lost them "which was expected" and they're still growing but they seem to be growing Tall and skinny "especially my nitrogen crosses".

I haven't got any pictures of these atm but if need be I can snap some to upload.

Does anyone here know what the problem could be if there even is one?

Will they possibly thicken up over time?

Are the scions or the stock stretching?

It's the scion that seems to be stretching. I'm not way to worried about the nitrogen crosses because I believe they have a tendency to do weird things like that but the others just don't quite look right.

Their not as thick as they were in their early growth:shrug:

Stretching is usually lack of light, but excessive N feeding will cause it too. You be the judge.

Well I think it's under some really strong lights atm and I haven't fertilized them since ferrel told me what to do so I don't know. Maybe I need to let them dry out even more "or longer I mean" before watering again.

I also recently repotted them in a lot larger pots as well as planted the ones without leaves ALOT deeper into the soil in hopes to promote better root growth.

Could that be the problem here?

By "lights" you mean artificial? I don't believe Trichocerei under lights will do well (unless it's HPS or MH), but I have no experience and may be way off.

Yea trichs are REALLY bad under lights but grafted to peres they should be a lot better off from what I understand but I may be a bit off as well.

I thought peres forced large amounts of water into the scion in which to swell it up more than the trich could do on it's on root stock. Am I right?

Small trich cuttings can root and flourish under artificial CFL lighting. I personally move them outside after the rootball establishes.

Yes they do, but more intense light is needed to build thick columns. The extra growth peres is providing, whilst kept under lights, is being put into vertical growth. Move them in the sun and they will fatten up. I might have some example pics somewhere but they aren't accessible at the moment.

Thanks for popping in Mostly. I hope your having a great time on vacation:grin:

I moved them all into my greenhouse today  so I'm hoping that will thicken them up well.

Hey spacey, just wondering (and I have no clue when it comes to grafts), but why you pick the greenhouse instead of just putting them in the yard to get all that good sun? To keep water off them? Extra heat? Keep birds away?

Now that you've got my gears spinning, how soon after grafting should/can grafted seedling trichs be put outside? Do they need to wait till they are a certain size? Obviously, with an acclimation to the sunlight being included in the move...

'Then', said the cat, 'it doesn't matter.'

Once you've grafted them and can see some growth is about the time you can move them outside. Start them in shadier light, to avoid burning them, and move them into stronger light over a couple of weeks.

Growth under fluorescent light is never as thick as ones grown under natural light. By natural light I don't mean full sun. I usually grow my pereskiopsis grafts in semi shade/dappled light.
