I just had a seedling neat trichocerus pop off a couple times now. Last time the cut wasnt even. This time when i thought it was on i let one side of a rubber band go and the other tight side pulled it off. This time around im going to leave it alone for a good couple weeks

Man my first try was all fucked up. I took the myrt and dipped the tip in dilute betadine. Then I cut the myrt. Then I dipped the pete into betadine. Cut the loph then stuck it on the myrt. I messed up by looping the rubber band across the top first and not the bottom. The cut pete flew across the room and landed cut side down of course . So I didnt know what to do so I put the pete back in the betadine for a few seconds and dabbed it off with a clean paper towel. Then I took my rubberband and looped it from the bottom this time. Then I rubbed it around to get the air bubble out. Put on one more rubber band and thats it. Man I hope it dosnt contaminate. Im really stressed out now Im not going to be able to sleep tonight.

I got one that had some mold growing, but it was only on the external cuts. Growth is resuming and its all good thus far. I dont think you should worry to much. But you know you can always just re cut the two unions of you feel it would be better.

i too just did my first graft about a week ago..... no real special technique was use...
had a year old pedro(grown from seed)..... took a sterile blade and chopped off the very tip.... the loph i chose is only a couple months old but the biggest out of the batch(a little smaller than an average pencil's eraser)...chopped a little more than half and just gently pressed it in place on the pedro...then carefully covered with the corner end of a plastic bag with a loose fitting twist tie to keep dust/dirt away.....
after a week it seems to already be starting to grow and take on the traditional loph shape.....
so i may end up grafting a few more of the little seedlings...as this was alot easier and hassle free than i thought it would be....
anyway congrats on your graft!

I have a question: Do you guys think that I could graft a graft onto a cactus...lemme rephrase that: You know those cacti that are sold at a bunch of places, about 3 inches tall, that have a grafted red or yellow cactus ball on top of a green 3 ridged cacti (don't know the type)? I am sure you have all seen these. Well, think I could cut the green grafting stock near the bottom and graft it onto a trichocereus chilensis, or any other columnar cactus? I was wondering about 2 grafts, 3 different cacti, and 1 single plant in the end....

Its still allive, no signs of damage. The loph is turning a darker green and is very hard TWO signs that the graft is taking.
WOOT!!!!!!!!!!1

Good luck, psycho. ANd good luck to everyone else, too. I have tried a few graftings in the last couple months, and only the last one has had any success. The first one I tried was with a peyote button and I grafted it onto the top of a San Pedro, looked really good for a week or two, but noe growth, and eventually the button just shriveled up and rotted away. Didn't harm the Pedro but the button is gone. I had done some research and it looked kinda easy, but I guess I wasn't sterile enough. Anyway since then I have done a few grafts: mostly Trich seedlings onto Perskiopsis. And none of them took. One or two were knocked off because of my clumsy self. Most seemed to kinda knock themselves off, I guess I need to bevel more (?). It's been very frustrating, but fortunately I have lots a Peres and lotsa Trich seedlings. And the most recent graft looks like it has started to sell up and grow, it's a Peruvianis on a Perskiopsis. I sure hope it takes, cuz grafting is awesome! And when I get the technique down, I hope to start grafting Lopho's, cuz that's where the phenominal growth rate is most useful. Thanks for sharing and letting me post my experiences. When my camera finally gets fixed, I'll probably post some pics. Peace - TT

Damn that sucks. Now im kinda bummed cause mine has only been like 48 hours so it still has plenty of time to mess up. Damner.
If my starts to die im gonna cut it off and let it heal. Thats what the guys at the nook said to do. They said if It doesnt take then I can cut it and the stock again and do-over. Hopefully I can but I really hope it works the first time. It seems like I did a good job by looking at it though. How long did it take the bevels on your stock to scab over?

Sorry to dampen your mood. I probably just have bad luck. Yeah, the best part is that you can try again if it doesn't take. Or in the case of a pereskiopsis stock, just let it branch and you can have several more peres to try it with. Also I have been grafting only these small seedlings, and was not using anything to hold them down or apply pressure between the stock and scion. Maybe the cause of my failures? I figured it was just one more thing to go wrong and I would make it simple.
