Questions on Failed graft
    #2133050 - 11/24/03 07:30 PM (13 years, 4 months ago)

Hi, I dont post here much but I cant find anymore info on grafting. Dont get me wrong, I read a lot on grafting before I attempted it and I think my problem was humidity but read on. I took a 18 inch pedro and cut off the top 6 inches to propagate a new one also. From what I've read I'm supposed to cut the root tip off the scion and place on the ring in the center of the pedro. It's a big ring so I just put it in the middle and placed it very carefully and it looked great when I did it. I then put a piece of sponge in the middle of a big strip of duct tape and placed it gently over the graft. Now it was a little loose and after 48hrs I picked it up to find a dried up scion, it was attached to the pedro like it took though which I thought was weird. I'm just trying to trouble shoot here so any info would be great. Also If I just placed the grafted scion and cacti in a high humidity environment would I have to put something over it? I dont think I've seen that done with the pedro thats why I ask. Sorry for the long post and thank you for any replies.

you have to connect the scion's vascular ring (sometimes it's a spot) with the rootstock's ring (pedro, in your case) but it has to be close to it's top and you should have put your scion over the ring, not right in the center of the cut.

Even in the center of the cut it's still in the ring though. Haven't seen that website though and It's got some good tips, thanks for the link. I also shouldn't have cut off the top completly but just trimmed it at a 45degree angle like he did. Oh well, glad I've got lots of seeds. thanks for the help.

I've seen a reference that says to overlap the rings of the scion and root stock to ensure that they meet at some point.
