All these trichs grafted to trichs.  Any reason for this other than being to impatient too let them root themselves?

I tried it out becouse I had some cool cuttings that I wanted to see grow fast, and have some big pedros I believe are PC.

That just seemed like the universe wanting me to graft stuff

As with babies, I am starting a pretty nice amount of seedlings, so grafting will let me see how the seedlings will look as they get older.

Then by the combination of how certain seeds germ/ grow and how the grafted ones look later on I will plan out breeding accordingly.

I don't mean to rain on your parade but I highly doubt that graft will take. The growth you're noticing on that pup is just from the reserves in the cutting. An un rooted cutting with a pup like that will still grow. The reason I say all of this about the graft not taking is because it's a mature column and the vascular parts that are grafted together will be too woody to make a successful union. For this to happen both vascular rings should still be non-woody and pliable.

Also wrapping in cling wrap like that will promote rot. The union needs to breathe to form callus tissue. Stockings, tape, weights, other ways that still allow for air to circulate are best for large grafts like this. Cling wrap is best for seedling to pereskiopsis grafting.

I've been doing multiple species to one stock lately. The reason is because I can, and also because having Three species growing in One pot takes up much less room than Three on Three different stocks. I'm also a little impatient and like to grow fast and slow.

Don't be a negative nancy man

I have 2 things to say

1, yes the base is woody, but the part I cut was perfectly fresh and green. Sliced like butter.

2, I ad the cutting sitting for at least 1-3 weeks before grafting it and noticed little to no growth on the pup.

I still am worried about it potentially molding which is why I asked if it were to have taken if mold could still be a problem.

Am planning on unwrapping it any day to check anyways

The cling wrap was just what I used for the 3 first grafts I attempted, I already re cut the other two and wrapped with micropore tape

I understand grafting slow growers to faster growers, I do it all the time, just not two of the same speed/genus, like why graft a l. williamsii to l. koehresii rootstock?  That's just crazytalk.  :tinfoil:

I can see doing a crested/monstrose trich to a pedro stock for faster growth and better water tolerance, and I guess even a bridgesii to PC pedro for the more hardy roots, but for some reason a trichocereus grafted to another trichocereus just looks silly to me, and I can't see myself ever trying it.  Seems like, as you mentioned it would be hard with larger cuttings as the cores would be too woody, and I try to make my grafts as aesthetic as possible. (except for pereskiopsis which always looks like shit and is only temporary IMO)

I do have a pereskiopsis with 4 different species of astrophytum grafted onto 4 different branches, it looks like some kind of Dr. Seuss Christmas tree, so I'm down with grafting multiple scions and making something artsy/freaking looking because you're bored.  Grafting is fun and all, just wanted to know if there was some advantage to the tricho on trich or if people were doing it for shits'n'giggles.

I would say if you have any goopiness/black take the clingwrap off.  I use parafilm on all sorts of grafts, including echinopsis/trichocereus, it adds some slight pressure and creates a great humid environment for the two areas to seal perfectly, but I only leave it on 5 days max, usually two or three.  Did you bevel/remove the hard waxy skin from one or both sides?

I'm just being realistic. There's some real sloppy work being done in this forum lately and it's time people get called out on it. I'm not here to coddle people and pretend like things are ok when they're not. I've been around long enough to know what works and what doesn't. Grafting a large column like that to another Trichocereus doesn't work. Thats just a fact. If the core is woody how can it form a successful graft union?? Not trying to chaff your arse either with this post, just telling you how it is. If it takes then I will publicly take back my words and shut up in future.

@P.zapp: When I meant multiple species to one stock I should of specified seedling grafting. I only graft Trich seedlings onto pedros to speed them up, I don't graft multiple mature trichs onto the one stock.

I appreciate the concern, and also giving advice where it is due.

Like I said in my last post though the core where I cut is not woody whatsoever. The base of that cacti is super woody but it has plenty of fresh growth at the top.

The other thing I said that makes me think it grafted is that the pup stayed about the same size up until I tried attaching it, now it seems fairly larger.

So I put 2 and 2 together and figured it may have grafted successfully. I will certainly update when I check to for mold.

Nice, I get it now.  I usually do trich seedlings to pereskiopsis, get them to about 8 inches then degraft and root.  Do you leave them on the pedro stock or eventually degraft and root when they're large?  If you don't mind I'd be interested in seeing some pics of what you're talking about, always fun to learn a new tek.

Is two pups a normal happening?!

Difficulty has more to do with reading abillity and ability to precisely follow directions. You need no knowledge of chemistry whatsoever, you just need to understand some basic principles as simple in concept as: water boils at 100C and freezes at 0C. Otherwise all published syntheses of organic and inorganic compounds can be reproduced successfully by pretty nearly anyone with at least average intelligence. Problems always have to do with availability of materials, not esoteric knowledge.

It's not really that out of the ordinary, to be honest. Not that it's a competition, but I've seen mine put out 3 at a time before, and I'm sure they could do more. But that's the beatuy of cutting the cacti and rooting them. Ya split one column into two plants - root the tip, and then the base can reply with throwing multiple pups, and before ya know it, you can have a little forest! It shows that the cacti is happy, though!

One day Alice came to a fork in the road and saw a Cheshire cat in a tree.
'Which road do I take?' she asked.
'Where do you want to go?' was his response.
'I don't know', Alice answered.
'Then', said the cat, 'it doesn't matter.'

Love the astro-tree.. lol  I have been thinking of doing that with a Pereskiopsis I have and some Atrophytum capricorne seedlings...LOL Beautiful graft. Love it.

You're right it's not a competition but one of my pedros has 4 pups and each one has 8 ribs :P

I can't brag too much though...  I got it that way and the cutting was so thick it hadn't even rooted after 6 months, which was the last time I checked for roots.  Now it's out in the greenhouse and it's been about 9 months since I got it and it hasn't shown any new growth whatsoever, I doubt it's even rooted now but I don't want to pull it up to check in case it has I don't want to break any.  Damn thing is so stubborn, meanwhile all of the other skinnier pachanois and bridgesiis all around it rooted within a couple weeks and have tons of new growth since potting.  I even tried intelligentlife's suggestion of using CloneX but I didn't make a fresh cut on the bottom when I applied it so it probably never penetrated the callous.

This is for you Karode

You can see on one side where it started to rot and or mold a bit, I cut the worst bit off though and have been spraying with a h202 water mix.

Just moved it outside for the summer :sun:

So, I guess we were both right? It clearly took but also had some rot/ mold  anyways I am happy. The pup is chugging along now.
