all SALVIA GROWERS!

i brought a salvia plant from abraod. i smuggeled it since i didnt have the energy to face customs.

anyway, i cut the plant to pieces. i rooted when i got home, about 2 pieces survived. by that i mean rooted and started growing some more salvia, but from the base.
i left the piece of rotting plant with the new live segmant.
this was a bad idea since the rotting has spread on and is now threatening the live segmant.
i think it has already effected the roots since the leaves started to go blak and fall.

if i just cut it where its not sick i tihnk it'll die, as it did when i cut it in the first place. also the plant is still very young.

how how how can i save my salvia?? ideas????

Well if the roots of the salvia aren't quite developed, then it shouldn't be in soil, it should be sitting in a cup of water. As for the rotting, you might be able to contain it by coating the roots and the stem in an antifungal powder at any nursery.

the root system is developt, i can see the roots growin thruogh the plastic cup and its grew in the entire space it has.

maybe i should be more clear:

the black part (see pic 1) is the old cutting that the new salvia segmant grew from.
it became black where i cut it (at the top) and the blackness started to spread down.
meanwhile a new salvia plant started to grow from the base of the slowly rotting part.

the new salvia grew great and produced a healthy root system.

now the blacking got to the base of the old segmangt where the two plants meet.
it is effecting the new plant and im guessing it has an effect on the root system since the leaves of the new plant started to blaken and fall (from down to up)

help pleaaaase

how didn't you cut that black rotting stem before??? er... isn't it pretty obvious? anyways, just cut all the black off and don't water from the top...
if your thumb is green enough you can detach that new branch and replant it... be careful with the root system.

how can i re-plant it? wont it just start to turn black?
if i cut it underwater may this prevent the blacking?

you can simply detach the healthy stem from the rotting one (you should loosen the soil, you want the roots too) and you can put it in a glass of water (if you have you can use rooting hormone), allow it to root a bit more for a week or so and then plant it in soil again. it would work also if you simply cut the healthy stem and root in water, just might take a little longer. if you do everything ok it won't rot because it's a tip cutting. please watch out not to overwater it after planting in soil...

p.s.: when you replant it please do so on a bigger pot - salvias need a LOT of room for their roots. i bet yours is full of roots to the bottom of the container...

Take er easy big fella. your plant needs a little TLC, nothing to drastic. don't worry about the dead part. Salvia does that, it seems. I've got a cutting from sputnik2 that has the same darn thing. hasn't stopped it from taking off. (thanks sputnik2) I should post a pic!!
Take it out of that cup for piss sake and into a nice 6" -8" pot with good potting soil. And it looks a bit over watered. prolly rotting the roots out somewhat. Add some light, leaves look very light green and she's stretchen'.
how olds the cutting? how many hours of light does it get? how often do you water?

You should invest in a flower pot. I doubt that plastic cup drains very well. It will get all kinds of molds and bacteria in the soil like that. Let the soil dry out a bit every now and then if the roots are developed.

i cut some holes in the bottem and it aint overwaterd. its just very dark potting soil.

also, won ti tdie without its leafs, coz their gonna fall soon??

yes, definitely develop your growing skills more before trying to grow salvia. it is harder to grow than your ordinary house plant..I would describe it as an "intermediate" level plant because of its soil, light, & humidity needs. growing plants such as salvia is more complex than just water & light factors.
