I don't think he was just stating the obvious lifestyle effects tv can have (make you fat, sit around a lot, etc) but the mental effects it can have. It's brainwashing, plain and simple. A perfect outlet for systems of repetitive, subliminal marketing schemes and culture influence. Commercials and shitty tv sitcoms present bad morals and ethics as comedy like "it's alright".

At least the Internet is optimized for free-thinking. The internet is limitless in terms of sourcing out information. But a tv, it's all force fed, prioritized news,information, products, drugs, clothes, you name it. It's been like this for decades now.

Also, you would never hear about awesome mushroom grows and how to do it yourself through television. But, the internet.. Hmm..

So, I'm going to have to say the internet is pretty fucking liberating. It's not that bad of a quote, he just used hyperbole.
