Terrence McKenna, thoughts.
    #2412139 - 03/09/04 07:30 PM (20 years, 1 month ago)

Well, I just finished "Food of the Gods" last Thursda and Monday, for a public speaking class I needed to come up with some sort of concept to explain. So I figured this would be a good time to understand the book I just read better. Nevertheless, I was wondering what sort of opinions people have of Terrence. I suppose I'd be fooling myself If I didn't expect a bias. But, if anyone knows how his ideas are viewed in serious scholarly circles that would be nice, too. Because I am trying to figure out what too take away from him on a personal level. Because I must admit, most of what he said made a lot of sense to me.

Wish me luck on this speech. I've herd Terrence go on for upwards of an hour and more about his theories. I have to fit the concept of a ~300 page book in a 10 min speech, and I know no one in the class will understand any of it anyway.

I don't know man. I've always wondered what knowlegable people think about his theories on psilocybin and it's role in the development of mankind and religion.

Exactly, I am wondering what people think as a side note, it is not even related to the lesson I will be giving on the book. I've been looking through a lot of news groups. And so far the only semi-reasonable objections come from someone with fairly obnoxious view.On similar matter the harshest and only One star review of the book is not a respectable person in my opinion. Somehow discredting any sense of rational reasoning, not to mention when you read the reviews he gives to other books.

Some raise, what seem to be legitimate parts about his reasoning, especially in some early parts of history the debates, and just how exactly he came to these conclusions. But it is even then, there are some points that can't just sit there. The book has only been out a decade and I suppose time will only tell how this book is looked at.

This turned into a thoughtfully stoned message.
Time for sleep.

Maybe I'll be back here too
It all depends on what's with you

Basically, they aren't.

Terence makes a lot of sense to me as well. He had some damned brilliant ideas that I think should be considered by everyone, but the legit scientific community won't be paying attention anytime soon. And like Leary, you have to discern where he states something as a serious theory, and where he is just speculating. He often just thought out loud, so if you take everything seriously (in his audio lectures and whatnot) you'll make a fool of yourself.

I think the only theory the scientific community really considers at all is timewave zero. Otherwise he's discredited as a raving mushroomhead
