General Growing ? and Observations
    #2136172 - 11/25/03 08:55 PM (20 years, 4 months ago)

Hey, just have a small question and then a couple of general observations about my buds current project:

First, as the lids were removed off a cake to dunk, he noticed really whispy growth on the dry verm along a 1/4 legnth of the egde. Thinks it is mycelium, but got his attention.

Can cobweb grow on verm? This would be dry "contam barrier layer" stuff. He's dunking w/ water and h2o2.

Secondly, some sweet observations were made of his 3 cakes in the fruting chamber extraordinaire (PMP). They are quite beautiful just to look at it with no pins or shrooms. Just the happy white mycelium seems to hold his interest for long lengths of time. Maybe it's because he was forbidden to look at them when they were in the early stages of their lives.

They are gorgeous and the "earthy" look of the inside of the PMP adds to the character of the whole project.

Even saw nice white fluffy myc start to show up on the outside and at the cake bases. This only after about 24 hours in the chamber. He thought it would take longer.

Probably the most interesting find tonight were the two stalactite formations on the (white) wall facing side of a cake. Like sharp, pointy FUZZ. Rather sweet looking and if he wasn't such a stickler about having them disturbed, he would have snapped some shots... ah, hell, may not be able to resist.

Good show, and its a shame he may not be around to view more of the excitement first hand. Next round.

that white whispy stuff growing in the verm is most likely mycelium...it tends to grow up into the verm layer from the cake.

sounds like rhizomorphic mycelia to me (they look like little spikes) and indicates healthy mycelia.

Yes. Cobweb can and will grow on verm, always sterilize your verm before using in any application to be on the safe side.

The best way to prevent cobweb is to minimize the ambient humidity. Cobweb needs a high humidity to grow.

Thanks! His cakes are all birthed and in the PMP now. First set are thriving and should be pinning in a few days.

Every other day or so he sprays the PMP with water/h2O2 solution. The water in the pod is also the same solution. Any chance of this harming the cakes? He has 2 felines and tries to keep the areas around the pod as clean as possible.
