Getting a laptop. Windows 7?
    #20925867 -

Anyone know the best place to buy a laptop with a Windows 7 OS pre-installed?
I'm not digging the looks of that Windows 8.1 shit, and the majority of laptops being sold seem to have it now.
I tried the filters on different sites like Amazon to view models that come with Windows 7 but it's insufficient.
Are there any good pro tips for getting a good, servicable laptop with the Windows 7 installed?
I've been out of the loop for a lonnnnnng time.
The laptop I'm currently using is almost 8 years old so I've been complacent in keeping up with the new technologies, brands, and best vendors.
My brother swears by newegg.com, but they don't quite have what I'm looking for.

Buy a PC without an OS, and then pirate a stable version of windows 7 off of a torrent site.

That had occurred to me. But I might as well just get one with Windows 8 and just wipe it if I'm going to go that route.
I'm looking for good vendor options that have Windows 7 pre-installs readily available.

The other option is to just do a dual boot with linux (which I currently use since Vista kicked the bucket on me years ago).
I've been sitting on some software that requires Windows though so I definitely need a Windows option even if I choose to continue to use linux as my primary OS.
Hoping I won't have to though and that Windows 7 will be sufficient for my needs with a few tweaks and bloatware deletions.

The sales rep at the store today told me Windows 8 has an option to revert the interface back to the old style.
But I don't believe him.
I also don't care for the touch screens or half the new shit these laptops are coming with.
I just want to get a good deal on a slightly older model or whatever. In the $300 dollar range or something.
Just about anything is going to be better than my 8 year old laptop at this point.
So this is as much about replacement as it is upgrading.

I am picky about a few things though.
Wouldn't mind getting up to speed on things like having an HDMI output instead of VGA.
Shit like that.

I think you need to have a windows 8 business license, or maybe an ultimate license to revert back to windows 7. I could be wrong though, it's not something I've looked into in a couple years. Touch screens are a joke for sure for a majority of people. I don't see any practical purpose for them (I have one laptop that has it, I haven't used the screen for anything but looking at).

Almost every computer you look at is going to have an HDMI output, it's pretty much standard now. Definitely keep an eye out. I don't know what to tell you in terms of where to look. In your price range, needs basis, you might want to check out Amazon or Ebay, even maybe checking out some pawn stores (which will often install Windows 7 on them if you ask them) that have a return policy (like 14 days or something).

Check Fry's for refurbished models. that's about your only hope. Once a new OS comes out, all the new prebuilt pc/laptops get the new OS pretty much.

Newegg really is your best bet though. I'd take a closer look and see what you could dig up there.

Also unless you build your own, you have to realize when you set a price limit, you are likely going to have to make some sacrifices in what you want. I have no doubt you could find the exact laptop you want if you looked hard enough, but chances are it would be out of your price range. That has been my experience every time. It's also why I started building my own computers.. Then I'm not paying for junk I won't use or don't need and can make sure I am getting everything I want out of it.

I have a lot of unregistered software, and have no bs. If you're saying this because you think stealing software is wrong, then that is admirable. If you're saying this because you honestly believe it's difficult, I'd have to disagree as it's really just a matter of following directions 9 times out of 10.

I remember back in the day seeing sites where you could customize the specs you want, not just filter your search results for them.
But I think it's mostly for gaming PC's, desktops, and maybe Alien Ware $2000 range stuff.
I guess that's off the table though, and unrealistic for what I'm looking for, which is a good deal on a per-fabricated laptop model.
It would be cool if a vendor could simply just load Windows 7 onto any model by request.
Most of the models I've been settling on seem to only come with Windows 8 and for some reason I'm having trouble finding a vendor who sells those models with Windows 7 instead.
I don't want to compromise too much just for the sake of getting a Windows 7 pre-installed model.
I'm almost to the point where I might just shell out the extra $100 for the OS in a separate purchase. But that doesn't seem right to have to do that if I'm technically downgrading.
Fucking Microsoft.

if it's the new look of the desktop you don't like about Win 8, you can change it to the old classic desktop so it looks like 7.

Linux Mint

Win 8 is absolute cod.  If you must use win they go to win 7 however I'd suggest Linux unless you need Windoze for compatability of games software or something.

General usage like office, music, video, browsing always Linux for me.  Its faster, more customisable, free (for home use) and comes with so much free software its amazing.  I don't have to pay for anything else on my computer I can get it free from the open source community

http://www.linuxmint.com/

The primary problem with Windoze is it slows down over time and is targeted by so much online malware and viruses.  Its also completely open, i.e there is 0 security and this cannot be altered unlike Linux.  Plus you have to buy additional software like office and anti-virus etc etc to make it do anything useful.

Linux you can run live from the CD without even installing it. Nowadays its so advanced I wouldn't touch windoze.

This is bad advice. Most venders actually charge more for laptops without operating systems. This is because Microsoft pay vendors to promote their os.

Yeah you can change the default settings and install a third party menu that imitates the Windows 7 menu. I've never done all this though, before taking my word you might like to look up the accuracy.

Anyway, I always like getting my laptops off ebay. Some people feel uneasy spending so much money on Ebay, but the prices are have been the best for me. I normally get computers 'as new' though.

I got a Windows 7 laptop this summer, a Lenovo Thinkpad T530i. I think Windows 7 stuck around longer for business laptops. No HDMI but it has mini-displayport and you can get an adapter for HDMI.

I got this one last week. Its definitely not top of the line but it is great for what I'm using it for. I'm getting rid of Windows 8 and installing Ubuntu. I might also change the HDD to a SDD, but I'm not sure how much faster/better that will make it. If I had to have Windows for something I would get a laptop with Windows 8 then get a torrent of Windows 7 and dual boot with Linux.

Don't buy from Newegg. They send out broken stuff and take months to fix their problems. It happened to me 3 different times.

Preferably get one with an ssd and don't worry too much about win8; I find it's perfectly usable and stable.
