What should I do. It seems you get more for you buck going with dell specs wise but its better quality with mac. Hows macs software? I am especially interested because I believe people write less spyware and viruses for macs then for pc. I really need a new machine that is semi-state of the art so can someone please recomend something quality and affordable. Price range $1,000- $1,500.

MacOS > Windows Linux > Windows and MacOS
If you are strictly interested in software stability and security, and have no idea on how to go about running Linux, and also have no interest in learning; go Mac. If you want to screw around with your hardware in the future, constantly upgrading it or trying out new manufacturers products, go with a regular PC, in this case Dell.

Thats just the advice I am looking for to be honest. Thanks man. Looks like Mac is right for me then. I am kind of sick of windows stability and security to be frank but like you said have not interest in learning linux. I think I may go with this what do you guys think?

If I got that what do you think I need upgraded? I know the ram is lacking so I would get atleast a gig there but what about processor is that weak for a laptop? My desktop I have had for two years is a 2.8Ghz and the dell XPS is 2Ghz at least aswell.

http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore?family=MacBookPro That Macbook pro is TITS, a little more then you want to pay for a laptop, but an amazing machine. I personally have a powermac G5 and I couldnt live without it. I have abosolutely no problem running Illiustrator, photoshop, Indesign, Safari, Itunes, AIM, and Word at the same time. Once you go Mac youll NEVER think about going back...

1gb RAM should be plenty. Unless you plan on gaming, 512 with suffice too. 1gig is always nice though.
Since the Mac hardware is all designed to match the architecture of the computer, it runs much more efficiently than a windows computer so you get more bang for your buck, so to speak. 2ghz on a Mac is not the same as 2ghz on a windows pc.

Is this WI FI?
Built-in Wireless Built into every configuration of the iBook G4 family: AirPort Extreme wireless technology based on the 802.11g standard, plus Bluetooth 2.0+EDR for wireless connections to PDAs, cell phones and other peripherals. You also get an Ethernet port and 56K modem for wired networking.
Or will I need to get a new modem for wire less internet? Im thinking more along the lines of the powerbook g4 the 1,299 one. I would like one of those duo intels but thats a little out of my price range right now and frankly I don't think I could really put it to its full potential.

I dont have a lot of time, but
TOSHIBA, TOSHIBA, TOSHIBA, TOSHIBA, TOSHIBA, TOSHIBA, TOSHIBA!
Ixnay on the Dell. Macs are ripoff country. Toshiba's are known for their reliablity/performance in the laptop world. I wish i could get in contact with my gf, but the model she bought a few months ago is amazing for its price. Whatever you do, stay AWAY from P4s. Especialy the 'extreme' edition ones. They eat battery power like no other. The model she bought came with a better video card than almost all the others out there, i beleive it was a Nvidia 6600 GT. That laptop ran World of warcraft better than the AMD 2500 + Radeon 9600 Pro machine i built her.
Gonna try and find the model.....

yeah that new mac is pretty pricey...It'll drop a wee bit once they come out with a new laptop...which will probably be like...tomorrow. Mac (and in general, technology) seems to do this to me constantly. Just when you feel your on top of the technology, your not anymore.

I have a gateway laptop, pentium runs win xp pro and I love it. I also have a pc desktop running win xp. Windows is pretty easy to work with if you understand it. If something is wrong with something just reinstall the driver or just disable it then renable it. Fixes about 100% of any probelms in windows.
Mac's are easy to use, but seriously a pc is just as easy.
Spyware for pc's is easy as two free programs; adware se personal and spy bot search and destroy. I run then once every two weeks roughly and never have problems. Windows anti virus is free also, get AVG free edition and have the best antivirus protection with 1/4 the resource alocation as Norton.
Macs are pretty cool though, but have fun paying out the ass for one. Linux? What a nightmare unless you are a coder and love tweaking with your computer. If you tweak windows or macs constantly then just run linux, but otherwise stay away.
Oh and the statement once you go macs you never go back. I used mac g3's and windows equivalents for years when they were king. I was such the computer nerd. Of course macs feel better, both visually and the keyboards. Other then that they are the same machines essentially. I actually got bored of macs, and didn't want to waste extra money buying one vs. a pc. Why did I get bored with a mac? Because you don't have todo anything with a mac. With a pc you used to be able to build one for cheap, install all the drivers, make sure everything was running tits. It was FUN! If anything goes wrong with my pc it is so easy to go through a simple logical process and know almost exactly what is wrong. It is like a game. What happens when you wireless network acts up? Hey if you are a system admin this happens all the time. Ok so if your the mac person you never have to deal with errors. It is almost degrading in a way because you can't even fix a simple problem. Not like macs never have probelms with drivers.
But I mean basic troubleshooting in computers is fun. It is so easy to work on a computer, just press some buttons.
Whatever have fun with whatever you choose if your a real computer user it doesn't really matter between windows vs. mac. I can use both and I would assume you could too. The only difference is an operating system, essentially all computers are the same.
