jeez how much is that gonna be? I think that alienware can really overcharge you just because of the name. If you already have a good gaming PC I would suggest getting a higher end ASUS or something of the like. It will be less expensive and powerful enough to run most modern games.

it's a good computer, but high price, and you've gotta consider the fact that with a laptop, you'll probably never be able to upgrade that stuff ever. so in 2 years, you'll have an average gaming machine if that.
and the new intel chips are on the horizon...

The desktop you could have built yourself, gotten twice as much power for half the price, and assembly is as easy as PLUG A FITS SLOT A until everything is plugged in. These days Intel even pre-applies thermal paste for you. But I don't have to tell you that. At least it has a sick case.
At any rate, that laptop is fly as fuck and you'll look awesome with it. Go for it if you can and it's your style.

I wouldn't doubt it. I have an XPS studio desktop (Dell does Alienware) and it's design is slick. After the Optiplex series went the way of the dinosaur Dell really got their act together. I picked it up because it's specs were actually within a 200$~ premium of what I could build myself. So Dell does a fair business when they can.
That said, all laptops are overpriced to power anyway. So if you're going to buy a fast one, all you can really do is compare specs, reviews, and buy one you like.
I have heard a lot of good things about the new Alienware series. I wish I could afford one!
I was more suggesting you build your next desktop, as it's really fun and not at all as hard as I thought it would be.

I work in tech support for one of the major video card/mobo manufacturer's.. Can't tell you how many calls I get where "I tried to put this GTX 580 in my Dell and it doesn't work.. I want a refund!!!!!". "Dell told me it would work, and they want to charge me $200 to get it running." I'm like, what kind of PSU is in it, and it's their usual 300watt generic POS with no rating on the +12v rail because it's Dell proprietary BS". Can you check your RAM timings? "NO, Dell has the BIOS locked down, but they said if I pay them $200 they can unlock it and set the ram timing for me"
Could write a novel on how much I hate Dell/HP, but I'll spare you guys.
ALMOST as annoying as the WoW players that call in.
Don't let that stop you from buying an overpriced alienware though, it's a halfway decent laptop for the money, but I'll go Nvidia over ATI any day of the week.

Granted, they still use shitty PSU's to save money. I was thinking about saying that but decided not to double post. Most people don't need to fuck with ram timings...
I am also in the industry.

Well when you try to pop a GTX 400/500 series card in a POS Dell... these GPUs are very sensitive to memory timings and quite often require configuring manually in the BIOS in order to get them stable without artifacting/driver crashing. With the older generation cards this was a non-issue. It's mostly Dell support that I hate the most, mainly cause I get to hear people bitching about it all day, 99% of the time I just want to be like, "That's what you get for buying Dell".. but you gotta keep it professional and shit..
I guess I just will never understand someone who buys a $250 computer, and then thinks they can just buy a $600 graphics card and it will give them a supercomputer or something. I like using analogies like "Well you can drop a Supercharged big block into a Yugo , but don't be surprised when the drivetrain just disintegrates the first time you hit the gas".
Not to rain on this thread or anything... I'm just venting from work
But yeah, a laptop is a laptop.

I have never yet run into any GFX/ram timing issues. Granted, I have only handled a half dozen cards above the new 400 series. But out of dozens of the last generation of cards I never had any issue, either. So I guess I am not really qualified.
I really think you're not giving Dell enough credit though, you're not really supposed to add parts to them in the first place. If you use them in their stock configuration I think they're probably quite stable.
I mean, you remember how bad it was right? With those nasty, terrible split-fold cases that had airflow so bad they might as well have been lint collectors?

I get about 150 calls a day from people with 460/470/580 cards etc, in my experience about 80% of the time they are getting artifacts its either from: Insufficient PSU, or RAM timings set to AUTO. RAM timings are not really an issue at all with any card before the 400 series.. very very rarely.
Yeah Dell only warranties your stuff if you don't make any changes at all to it. You upgrade the graphics card (or anything), you void the warranty and they wont help you even with tech support. It doesn't help matters that they use only the cheapest, lowest grade components possible to 'save costs'. They have their BIOS locked down, pretty much the only thing you can change is boot priority, lol. Fuck with the BIOS, they void your warranty. Anything they CAN help you with, they want to charge you. This is why I tell gamers to never buy dell if you can avoid it. Their support blows donkey ballz. HP is pretty much the same story. Oh my god please do not remind me of those split-fold cases.... that was one of those thing where it's like, "hey this is a great idea", which actually turned out to be one of the worst ideas ever. I'll take my HAF X thanks.
As for laptops, I prefer Toshiba, they make some good ones. Desktop.. build it from scratch is the only way imo
