questions questions questions...
i'm about to hit the sac, but my first question is this... where do you install programs to? the first thing i went to do is install firefox, but it's like "you wanna install in this directory?" (/home/phychotron/documents/firefox-installer) which cant be right... so just out of curiosity, where does everything get installed to?
more questions to come... peace

hrm...
usually /opt
things that aren't part of the os usually go in /opt/product_name
but for shit like command line tools that you don't want to have to modify your path to include...you can symlink them into /bin or /usr/bin or some shite.
check this and others like it:

that's one of the things I hate about Linux AND windows.
Linux just installs shit EVERYWHERE, and has no centralized way of knowing what is installed. It'll put files in like /etc/clownshoes/lickdick and /usr/bin/fuckmehard and /bin and /lib/mod/goatse
but then you just clutter the fuck out of your system
and WINDOWS does the opposite. it puts it all in one spot and then uses that registry to handle all the small details and that sometimes gets way too cluttered and bad as well.
the BEST way I knew of was this distro called "Gobo" linux, that basically did this. It installed ALL of the program in say.../opt/<program name>
and then made LINKS from all those files to where they are supposed to be, so /opt/<program name>/bin all had links to /usr/bin where the files were supposed to be. and it keeps a file of all the links it makes so if you uninstall a program, it a.) deletes all the links, and b.) deleted /opt/<program name>
It's a sexy method. But it's not foolproof.
I personally find Linux to be a pain in the ass 100% more than Windows. But to each his own.

it's just a matter of getting used to the different management and organizational tools.
Psycho...if you can't create it...make sure / is writeable by your user or group.
you might need to be root or sudo it.

first of all, congrats on your choice! it'll probably take some months before you get efficient at the linux system, but soon enough you should have no trouble!
what distrib are you running, btw?
if you're running debian, there is a great program called apt-get that will install any package with direct debian support (debian.org/packages i believe is the site). any other distrib, well there are 'package managers' that make installing of the most popular packages a lot easier and more organized. search 'synaptic package manager' for example.
as to the talking to a win2k computer, linux can do it no problem. winblows has some trouble talking to a linux computer, though (for example my machine is partitioned - the linux half can perfectly access everything on the winblows half, but from winblows, i have to run some special program to view my linux half.)
feel free to pm me or hit me up on messenger if you have any more questions!

check out Samba...that should do the trick for cross platform NFS mounting and communication.

Linux actually has a pretty decent file system layout.. If your system is so cluttered its because you didnt install things properly.
PREFIX senor.. GCC, learn it, live it, love it.

actually, I run win2k pro on my work laptop, but I deal with a lot of *nix shit for work.
I don't have a personal computer, but I'm thinking about building one soon to be an uber music encoder so I can encode my vinyl, if I do that, I might give RedHat a run.
I'm just not sure for audio shit if linux is up to snuff with drivers and yadda yadda...

i'm using suse 9.1 personal, cause someone recomended it awhile back for beginners (that or knoppix, i got the live eval version and it was annoying)... so it's pretty cool, a lot of annoying new features, and i dont like having to enter the root password to do everything.... probably a good thing though, but still.
how do i assign myself permission to create folders and such? i have Yast, that lets you set users and such, and thier are tons of groups to add users too, and i've added root and it didnt help, as well as all of them, so it's wierd.

i've never used any GUI programs for users and permissions and all that... just use the command line. check this chmod-tutorial, this chown-tutorial, and this for random info.
as to afoaf, linux has always been a bit buggy when it comes to drivers, but i've personally never had any problems with my audio drivers. ask around in some communities, i'm sure you can find a linux solution,

OH NO !!!! DISTRO WARS !!! AARRRRGGGHHH!!!
No really, if you're used to windows, SuSE is probably one of the best distros for making a transition. Besides, when you hear people saying "Readhat is better than Mandrake, distro x is better than distro y", don't listen to them . It all depends for what you'll be using your OS, for a simple workstation, like you intend to do, RedHat, Fedora, Mandrake, Debian, SuSE are all good. You just have to choose one and learn the specifics. i.e.: SuSE has yast, but the others distro don't, gentoo as something similar called emerge but others don't, debian has aptget but other don't. I would stick to SuSE has it is a very user friendly distro. Regarding your specific questions about Firefox. You are probably not logged as root, that's why you can't write to some directories. Just install it to "/home/phychotron/firefox" and link the file "firefox" inside that directory, to a icon on your desktop. Linux has many ways to install software, if you can find it in "rpm" format then that's great for a beginner because it's just click and install. You'll also find software in source code format which you'll have to compile.

yea, i figure i'll stick with suse... i never put much stock into the distro x is better than distro y, cause linux distro's are like assholes... everyone's got one and they all serve the same main purpose
if i were to just install it in /home/user/firefox would other users be able to use it?

If you use PREFIX for every install then you have to constantly update your PATH variable right? And the other path, for /lib..I dont remember what that one is called (it's been a while)

You're an idiot for never using a real distrobution like Debian and then saying linux as a whole does such and such. Debian has POLICY which requires things go where they are supposed to go. Installing, configuring, and uninstalling software on Debian is a breeze - IMMENSELY EASIER THAN IN WINDOWS. If you want to be trendy, you can even go gentoo, which is, at least, not RPM based shit
Note: this is not to say it isn't possible for you to break policy by being an idiot in root. Note: I realize Debian is just as virtual as any other distrobution

"/home/user/firefox" will only have write permission to "user", but you can configure the kind of access you want using the konqueror explorer. Just right click the folder and reconfigure the permissions.
