Im looking for someway to interface with a linux machine which is on campus. I only have windows installed right now. I can use putty, but its only commandline, and realistically Id like something which would show the actual linux desktop. Does this exist at all?

yo can run exceed on windows and do X11 forwarding to load any GUI app on the linux machine locally.

So Im using VNC Viewer, and its asking for the server to connect to. I put in the server and it says connection refused. I know its the correct address as Ive been connecting to it from putty. Any ideas?

you probably need the vnc server running on the linux box, so it'll accept the connection

Oh well I have to code some shit, which should take me many hours. I dont like using the putty command line, as theres no mouse control so coding becomes really annoying. It will be many thousands of lines, so I dont want to have to scroll up and down constantly. Its due tommorrow night at midnight, realistically I should have started it sooner.

If you run Exceed on your windows machine, you can do X11 (Xwindows) forwarding from the linux box to your home box and use any of the GUI tools you had on th elinux box. gedit, vim, etc.

Well Im not the admin of the linux computers, so could I still do that? And also, I assume that would require me to still go over there.

i think that would require you going down there as well.
the computers probably only have ssh turned on by default, maybe samba - but probably not any vnc type server.
if you were running a linux box, i'd say type the code on your own machine and use scp to keep sending it to the school's server... from windows, you could use ftp, i guess..

No, all you need is a shell account you can login to.
Exceed is a Xwindows server for WINDOWS. You run it on your box, then use it to 'draw' X11 windows off the linux box, over the network, on your box.
Here at work I have a windows laptop, but I run Xterms off of a local server through exceed, as well as other linux GUI apps I need for work.
