Pro or Media Center Edition?

I imagine I'll be using it mostly to type up papers, play games, listen to music, watch movies, go online, maybe record some music, image editing, video editing...that sort of thing. Which do you think would be better?

Unless you'll be using your box as a genuine Media Center hub, connected to a TV, I'd go with Pro. Most (and I imagine all) of the special functionality of MCE can be replicated by FOSS, except perhaps for Native TV tuning, but as you don't mention that in your post, I imagine it's not important for you.

Yeah I was considering springing for the MacBook Pro, but it's limited in the programs available, especially in the games department. Other than that it seems like a solid buy.

I customized the laptop I'm getting to include a TV tuner card, but I'll be taking it around with me all the time so it certainly won't be dedicated.

Is the TV aspect of MCE the only significant difference from Pro?

If you're a serious gamer, don't go with a mac.

But if you're looking for a computer that will actually inspire you to act upon your creativity simply through the ease of use of its creative programs, you should get a mac. Really.

Then once you get a handle of the free basic programs that come with the mac (iMovie, GarageBand, etc.), you can easily download the more advanced programs (Final Cut Pro, for example) and really teach yourself how to be a filmmaker or a computer musicmaker, whatever you're into at the moment.

I second that.  You can run XP (pro or home only) with boot camp.

But maybe you already have hardware as you are only asking about XP versions.  Media Center is cool for movies and music, you can surf your collection with a remote and a nice interface.  But aside from that, it's about the same as Pro.  I use my laptop for movies since I don't own a tv, and I use pro.  So it's really not necessary, but I installed media center at one point to test it out.  The interface was nice.  Also there is a open source app that does the same thing that runs on Pro, so that takes care of that.  But I find it's just fluff anyway, I don't use the interface.  If you're willing to use a mac it's the best!

Get a mac and put XP on it. You can play any PC game you want.

Wouldn't that slow it down a bit though?

No, new macs have a program called Boot Camp that has completely optimized the whole emulation of XP thing. Cause it's not emulation. You actually load XP on to it. Read up on it man and cancel your laptop order!

...what's the point in paying more for hardware if you plan to run XP on it?

The point is that you can run OSX when you want to. I have used XP and Mac and Linux for over 10 years, I support 50 employees and a few servers all running windows, and I can say without a doubt that osx is the best consumer os available. What's wrong with rebooting on occasion to play your favorite game, then booting back to mix a track, edit some video, or just manage some daily tasks on the best os ever? Sure you could do it all on XP, but why torture yourself with ridiculous problems that shouldn't exist. Windows is a popular hunk of junk.

because switching OS, for any reason, completely eliminates the slight usability margin OSX has over its competitors

I accept that there is some stellar production-level software that is native to OSX, but for the needs of an amateur/hobbyist, having to switch OS to play games eliminates any real advantage OSX has over XP. I imagine that this will draw a lot of heat, but if you have sufficient interest/experience to keep a windows install reasonably secure, it's a pretty good system to run

I don't see how rebooting eliminates the advantage. Please articulate. Also it's not about usability. Win, Linux, or Mac can all do everything, but there is a difference to the amount of BS you have to wade through on each system. I find windows to be incredibly slow when it shouldn't be on brand new computers (opening programs, surfing local network, etc), it breaks all the time(explorer crashes, silly error messages that occur without discernible reason), and I don't even need to mention viruses. I personally have never had a virus on my windows computers (I have 3 at home) but I see them every day at work, however I have never ever seen one on a mac. Also, Apple has released an update at least once every year since osx, XP is still being patched like a sinking ship, and vista does not look promising. I wouldn't be surprised if MS starts to have serious market share loss over the next couple years. I could go on..
