Has anyone had more trouble before antidepressants/anti-anxiety medication than you did after?
    #20869041 -

Recently I went to a therapist and he recommended medication,  but after a bit of looking around I've found cases of people getting suicidal thoughts and long-term withdrawal symptoms for over a year after trying to get off some SSRIs.

I really don't want to go on medication and I don't think my case warrants it. So I wanted to ask if any pubbers have been prescribed medication that made the symptoms worse either once you started treatment or after you tried to get off the medication?

Yes!!!!

Meds fucked up my life for 18 months or more. Once the first one didn't "work" he wanted to try others. The episodes spiraled and it was much worse than before I touched that nasty shit. I don't have a "normal" or "average" psyche, there are no meds that can fix me... I get depressed (this is normal), I have happy times (also normal), but just because my cycles are more exaggerated than the "perceived normal" people does not make me ill. There isn't a medication for that... That is who I am.

I won't go into the distress these chems caused me, it was bad though. Much worse than the any of the recs I ever experienced.

If you know your case doesn't warrant it, tell the doctor NO!

Don't be a guinea pig, they get paid commissions for prescriptions for mind meds... don't do it.

Wellbutrin made a really bad depression psychotic, for about a week.  then when it took hold it was like ecstasy 24-7 for a couple of months. That is, once i got past the shit side effects and it started working, it worked very well.

Did you doubt that you needed it, that your case warrants it, starfire?

No, i needed it in that case.  But goddamn, wellbutrin is like bath salts with all the good stuff taken out of it.  It made me nuttier than shit.  that was the only time i really needed an AD.

:threadmonitor:

I constantly evaluate my own mental state. I consider my self bipolar, I dismiss my own thoughts though because i'm biased and self centered. I've nothing to add to this thread sorry, but i'm interested in what others have to say.
@ninja cat, you're clearly going through some rough times to even consider making this thread. Hope everything's goes well and you get things sorted out. More recently i've found personally that my mind is eased by simply vaping a little MJ (a little and no more is key) and going for a walk in the bush, exploring. I need some time to succumb to my emotions it seems. I doubt i relate though, sorry. Like i said though, i'm only posting to monitor this thread. Please keep us updated.

Anti depressors saved my life.

I had to try lots of different medications before I found the good one (some quite unpleasant) but now that I found the one that fits me. I've been doing great ever since. I can't say I feel any side effects.

I think this is key here... the patient always knows best.

Anti-depressants made my depression worse, and made me want to kill myself. Turned me into an emotionless zombie.

No. I fair better on my anti depressants. Except it makes me wonder if so many people getting worse on the anti depressants were really depressed in the first place. They couldn't have been too depressed if all of a sudden suicidal thoughts bother them after.

Thanks for the responses and concern everybody! I really appreciate it!  I don't intend to use medication unless I don't see any progress in a month, that being said therapy has been helping me feel better.

@Patlal: I'm really happy medications worked for you! How long did you struggle with side effects/medications that didn't work before finding what you're using now? What are you using now?

@Mr Magenta: I don't know if it's any of my business, but I'd recommend seeing a psychologist and seeing if medication might be right for you. My mom's bipolar, she wasn't diagnosed until 20 years after my dad noticed something was weird about her, now she's too burdened by symptoms to even admit she might need help. I don't mean to scare you, I just don't want anything bad happening to ya.

@Kaktos: From what I've read it isn't that they didn't have ideation before medication, it's that they got worse while medicating or after they stopped medicating. Did you ever go through an adapting period or have any side effects from the medication?

I had severe depression as a kid and throughout my teenage years, with psychotic episodes they said. Then they changed it to bi-polar. Then schizoaffective. Then back to severe depression w/ psychotic episodes. The shrinks put me on every Anti-depressant and anti-psychotic known to man at one point or another, not at the same time, but try this for a few months, ok that's not working.. try this, try that. I had suicidal thoughts before, and attempted a couple times. But the SSRIs and SNRIs just made it much worse. That's just the short version, I don't feel like writing a novel right now. You name the drug, I took it at some point. Celexa, Effexor, Zyprexa, Paxil, Depakote, Wellbutrin, Prozac, Lexapro, Zoloft, Symbyax, Luvox, etc. I'm talking over a period of 10 years here. Trust me, I was fucking depressed.

They didn't work for me, they made everything worse. They turned me into a zombie. I got the worst of the side effects. I know they work for some people.

Not everyone has the same brain chemistry bro.

I ended up stopping taking all the SSRIs and just sorted out my mental problems myself.
Meditation, Martial Arts and LSD therapy worked for me what 10+ years of therapy and mind-bending anti-depressants could not.
I no longer suffer from depression.

finding things to kick it is the most effective treatment, but sadly, the big cause of not doing those things IS depression. so one finds that they have to be at the end of their leash, so to speak, before they say "fuck it, only healthy activities from now on!"
