Quote:
Some therapists use virtual reality to desensitize patients to the feared thing. Other forms of therapy that may be of benefit to phobics are graduated exposure therapy and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). Anti-anxiety medication can also be of assistance in some cases. Most phobics understand that they are suffering from an irrational fear, but are powerless to override their initial panic reaction.
Graduated Exposure and CBT both work towards the goal of desensitising the sufferer, and changing the thought patterns that are contributing to their panic. Gradual desensitisation treatment and CBT are often extremely successful, provided the phobic is willing to endure some discomfort and to make a continuous effort over a long period of time. Practitioners of neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) claim to have a procedure that can be used to alleviate most specific phobias in a single therapeutic session, though this has not yet been verified scientifically.

It has to do with their... nevermind. I just had the perfect idea, go find a book on the anatomy of spiders and why they do what they do. What better way to overcome your fear then to learn about them.
They are pretty though aren't they?
-------------------- The only thing that burns in Hell is the part of you that won't let go of life, your memories, your attachments. They burn them all away. But they're not punishing you, they're freeing your soul. So, if you're frightened of dying and you're holding on, you'll see devils tearing your life away, but if you've made your peace, then the devils are really angels, freeing you from the earth... bloodflower6 Yay for Pornography!

The brightly colored ones are sort of attractive...those eyes get me though. It helped to chant "beauty in all things, beauty in all things, beauty in all things," incessantly.
I think you're right...I'm going to get a book about them. That's how I overcame my fear of death, by learning about it. Now I actually look forward to dying. (in a good way)

Oh, he's beautiful! Is tarantula fur soft or stubbly? I'd LOVE to hold a tarantula.

I've actually touched a tarantula before, in 7th grade. It wasn't that bad. It's the "webby" spiders that really scare me.

I am WAY impressed. I absolutely love all creatures. They're great. The only ones I have trouble with is parasites. I'm working on external ones at the moment... the internal ones will take a bit longer. I was tripping the other night, and found a great big tick on one of my cats. I gave it a sporting chance and threw it out the window.

Yo Ellemy, the way to overcome the fear of spiders is to see them for what they are, just other living things like yourself. Think about what it is like to be a spider. Think of how scared and unhappy a spider might be knowing that everything is afraid of it and will try to kill it. They can't help being ugly, and wouldn't be if they could choose. Who knows, chances are you were probobly a spider once. Have empathy for them and the fear disapears.
