I need a non-stoner excuse for purchasing a gasmask at an army surplus shop just incase the people at the shop ask, which they probably will.
I'm not going to rock up and say "gonna make a gasmask bong" for obvious reasons.

Serious answers please.

And no one telling me "it's a novelty thing" and "it's a waste of time"

Just buy it and don't say anything. Trying to give a reason or explain yourself when doing something makes people wonder why you're explaining yourself for something so innocuous. Hide in plain sight, buy it and leave. Hell it's Halloween, they've probably sold all but the last two by the time you get there.

how about this op..

go in grab the gas mask ask the dude how hes doing he will say good, then ya pay the man, he put the shit in a bag and you walk out.

no different than buying peanut butter from a grocery store.

or if your willing to wait buy the shit online so you dont have to make eye contact.

buying a gas mask is considered prepping 101 so there is that.

Here in the U.S as long as you don't ask questions and what you're buying is technically legal nobody cares. Maybe it's different in New Zealand but I wouldn't think so.
