*UPDATE 12/8* My first time Poppies!!! ( Step by step from seedling growlog ) * 1

I will be growing 2-3 strains of Papaver Somniferum this year. It's my first time ever growing poppies but I've grown veggies and whatnot and done a lot of research so I think I'll do fine.

I have already planted some, but I have 250 seeds of P. Somniferum ( var. Giganteum ) on the way to plant, and a 1/2 lb of seeds to try a PST for my first time as well.

Here is my first little Papaver Somniferum seedlings! ( I have no idea the strain ):







Questions, comments, concerns, all welcome!!!

*** UPDATE 12/8/14 ***

I now have two separate big pots I have with sprouts popping up, all at different stages, so when you see my pictures of a bunch of different staged plants, it's because I sow new seeds almost every day.
Here you go guys and gals!
And since it's been a while since I updated, I figured I'd load you guys/gals up with quite a few pics to look at, all high quality. Please, enjoy :smile:

Thanks guys! So much! It gives me great joy to see em' sprouting up. Gently brushing them with my fingers as to give them a little loving human contact which all plants love.

PS: I'm located in Southern California by the way. The germination seems to be happening like a breeze. Seems like these things are going to grow like weeds in my climate. Haha, should be fun and easy.

Nice! Use any mulch or anything?

Im thinking of doing the same here in Central AZ but Im not to sure if I should plant them in our crappy soil or add some mulch to the area.

They grow like weeds pretty much anywhere. In my climate as well (west Europe) provided they are planted at the right time. I will be growing them inside however, which is a bit of a challenge because they do like some space and a lot of soil as far as I know.

If u got crap soil just make sure to break it up so they can get a root hold and just plant more of them!

Poppies grow very well in some of the crappiest soil on the planet.That being said,I do find that mixing a lot of sand in my mix makes for some really happy flowers:thumbup:

There's a small bit of mulch in my potting soil mix.

It's a nice high grade vegatable potting soil I usually grow my herbs and veggies in. But what other people said, they grow like weeds so it seems even though this is my first grow. They seem hearty and adaptable.

I'll keep pics posted when they change appearance. But for now they have BARELY changed, some are just now getting their first little leaves. Some have had them for a few days and are just getting slightly larger. I just give them human contact daily, water when dry **lightly water, my first water was a bit heavy on accident**, and log pictures of them.

I'll keep this updated with each move. Today or tomorrow, (more likely tomorrow) I'll be planting more of a slightly different variety.

UPDATE, PICTURES: YAY!

So I got some lateral growth worth showing I guess. Check it out! Plus i just sowed 20-40 more of a different variety today and yesterday, 20 today 20 yesterday. We will see how many pop up and germinate.

Me too. I'll keep you all posted for sure every step of the way.

I'm excited to see which colors I will yield this year. 2-3 different strains should supply at least 2-8 different colored flowers! I hope. Unless they are all really strict online. But some I got were from a close friend not a store so I hope those are the most beautiful.

Does anyone know if there is any particular nutrient that could be added to the soil that would promote the potency of the pods?

they tend to like shitty sandy soils, i wouldnt worry too much about soil additives. they LIKE shitty soil conditions. with that said, it wouldnt hurt too add some liquid silica additive in a low dose. silica strengthens the cell walls so your poppies will have stronger stems and be more resistant to stress.

What type of weather are you having I am in south florida and they fail to grow in the summer time a cold front is needed to help germinate them is what I hear I just planted gigantium and afghans --because the weather turned cold. Poppies will grow in shitty soil but from what I read good nutrients help them grow better I used a mix of fox farm garden soil perlite and vermiculite with spag moss into some turkey trays and will transplant when they get bigger which scares me because last time they died when I did this.

From what I understand they dont transplant well. Thats probably why they died last time
