Using a dictionary as "proof" that you are correct about philosophy * 1
    #20488653 -

Granted maybe its useful to clarify meaning every now and again. But does no one else find it somewhat petty and unhelpful when people resort to dictionary definitions of philosophical concepts? Isn't that just an appeal to authority? Words are just tools for us to use to express ourselves. Often dictionaries will have several related meanings for one word.  We are here to discuss the meanings of concepts /words are we not? Forgive me, but i think that certain concepts are so subjective that we don't need to use no dictionary.

Sure. Except many posters don't define their words and so the dictionary definition is implied. Then when that same definition is applied the poster often backtracks and then creates a novel definition.

If one is going to use a novel definition best to state so right away not after someone takes the word at face value and then points out the nonsense.

I agree, although i think some words/ concepts are so clearly debatable/subjective - for example, good or evil, the ambiguity of the words is somewhat obvious and need not be molested by dictionary definitions.

I guess i just dislike it when posters seem to act as if the dictionary is some sort of god given , strictly laid down set of rules.

But yeah.

The meaning behind words is completely relative.

My blue is not the same as your blue.

We use other words to describe the meaning of words when we don't have an example of the word right in front of us. The words we use to describe words might be different from the words someone else uses to describe something.

Words conjure up images, ideas, and concepts and they aren't all going to be the same for everyone.

No one is right or wrong when it comes to words.
