Authors of dictionaries

We think with words.  Whoever defines these words defines our thoughts.

That is all.

Yeah. This thread was mostly in response to people that use a dictionary to define a word in S and P threads. I think this has serious implications.

I think it's a good idea to give certain words meanings, so that when we use those words, we each know what another is talking about.

well, you never know exactly what someone else is trying to describe, because words are only labels or representatives of thoughts, feelings, objects. How can Love have the same meaning for you that it does for me? We process these symbols slightly differently, and they are a general label in the first place...

IMO, The authors of dictionaries don't define our thoughts, but simply define our expression and relationhip with others.

in Orwell's 1984 they try to eliminate words from the dictionary to eliminate free thinking, without words ideas cannot be expressed. Eliminating creativity, and making sure everyone thinks the same.

the dictionary is just a book. it should not be held in any special regard, just because it tells us what we are literally saying. i think the ability to read further into speech is a natural and wonderful process, and im not gonna let any webster dude tell me i can only think what they have written down.

also, i dont think i think in words. i put ideas together. its one of the reasons i am not a great writer-i cant put my ideas to paper.

Ive always said that when people "correct" me using dictionary terms.

My words are an expression of self - a bridge, from my mind to anothers.

I don't claim to use the English language 100% correctly, but I do my best.

Certain words have certain meanings to me - and these meanings go far beyond what any dictionary could attempt to "explain"

Spirituality
Soul
Love
Compassion
Creativity

words like these mean much more to me than Good ole webster what like to define.

But if we hear words that are defined to mean one thing, which is generally accepted by society as to that meaning, and someone else uses it based on how he "feels", doesn't confusion possibly ensue as to the user's intent? Isn't that a good reason to clarify how one is using the word, so everyone is on the same page?

If I say it's a "fair" day, because I like wind and rain, but it feels "fair" to me, how does that translate into the recipient's understanding of the word "fair"? If he is in New York, and I am in San Francisco, he may believe that I am experiencing nice weather, and we all know that wind and rain isn't nice, unless you like that kind of weather.

And there could be more confusion. What if he says "what do you mean it's 'fair'?" Do you say, "It's a really nice day."???

communicating with people while not in their presence sucks. it absolutely sucks. i read somewhere that what we physically "say" only communicates about 9% of our ideas. i dont want to bother with what less than ten percent of me wants others to know.

take flirting, for example. i think what i would say to a prospective girl is by no means as important as my body language as i say it to her. i could be horribly destroying the english language, but as long as my tone and body language are meaningful she knows exactly what i want to say.

I don't think so.
New words are added every year.  In my experience, there are few cases where a word or combination of words are not able to accurately describe a thought/idea/situation.  But please note that these thoughts/ideas/situations were not limited because of a lack of the correct word... only the communication of such thoughts/ides/situations was limited.

This truth is quite evident in toddlers.
Case in point: My girlfriend's niece.  She was taught sign language well before she could learn to talk.  The toddler's mouth was incapable of actually forming the correct sounds, but her motor skills were already able to help her communicate. (Side note:  apparently, teaching sign language to toddlers actually minimizes frustration, brought on by the inability to communicate, and they tend to cry less.)

dictionaries only reflect the way language is used. they don't dictate the definitions of words, PEOPLE DO - that's why new editions are constantly being released. a primary liguistic principle is that meaning follows usage, not vice versa. if word usage followed predefined meanings, language would never change. dictionaries have their uses, but only a weak or lazy mind would say "you're wrong because my dictionary says so!"

I think MM posted that Eskimo's have 20 words for snow and it would be beneficial if we had twenty words for love. If the dictionaries and thesauruses did not reflect vernacular vocabulary, our thoughts could be limited.
