so I am now officially a High School algebra teacher at a super ghetto school * 2

lol, how did this happen. math is the last thing i ever expected to teachA

out of 1409 students, only 58 are white.

here are the stats for the school. for all you racists out there, compare the passing rates of the white folk to the passing rates of the other races...




anyway i'll be making more than twice as much as I've ever made and only working 181 days out of the year :laugh:unno:

i think 49k way more than a single chldless individual needs to survive. i've survived on 20k, though my parents were still paying my car/medical insurance then. but now that i am 25 that will only total about 180 a month apparently

today is my 25th birthday. in before some of the students are older than me lulz

yeah that is what I am hoping for, that I can "get through" to some of them. if not, fuck it, it;s 4k a paycheck before taxes, thats enough for me to put up with bad attitudes. as a teacher you typically have to start out at bad schools to get your foot in the door before you can move up to better schools. it's kind of dumb though because it perpetuates the system, all the good teachers want to go to the schools where students come from families with money cuz those students tend to have more potential to be invested/interested/able in their schoolwork and all the shit teachers are at the schools with all the poor students who generally dont want to be there and tend to not have much potential. so it's no wonder so  many of these kids from ghetto schools drop out, or at least never get higher education, and often end up institutionalized

i think that is often the case but it also depends on the private school. i was really referring to the public school system. for example these are the stats from the school i went to which was ridiculously competitive (I graduated with a 3.75 and was not in the top 10%). compare the teacher stats in the top right between the school i posted in the OP and the school below

just proves how racism comes about. you seem to be admitting how you became a racist- a failed logical induction. i took 3 logic courses in college and i am fairly confident that i will be able to perform the correct induction, taking into account SES and family involvement as (probably) the most important variables in student success.

but i am not going to talk further about racism in this thread, i am sick of the discussion. just had to take the opportunity to point out something to other posters about what you said and its implications about your psyche

Damn, you're right.  The system fails again!  Anyway at least you can make some bank, and maybe touch a life or two along the way.  Are ya nervous or excited?
My old chem teacher had taught in the ghetto, and he told me that a lot of kids had absent or drug addicted parents and school was the only structure they had in life.  I imagine it would be enormously rewarding to convince a kid like that to not go gangbanging or give them some epic life guidance or something.  Although its probably really hard for teachers not to come across as squares lol.

I don't know if I agree with that.  Things like this can legitimize an argument like "black people are still more economically disadvantaged than white people".  Which we should work to fix as a society.

Yea generally speaking, private school teachers get paid way less than public school teachers. The ones at my private school were paid only $11-$15 an hour or so. But they did get paid summer vacation though. A lot of them had to teach summer school to supplement their income still, because they were paid ridiculously low.

We even had teachers who had PhD's from Brown University or Yale, and generally they start teaching at that low wage for 2-4 years before moving on up to teaching university.

I have heard recently though that tuition is 3 times more now, it's almost like $30,000 per year because now everybody knows that school is a gateway to college. They have 100% successful college entrance rates, with most of them going to Ivy Leagues or UC Berkeley or UCLA or USC or Stanford or MIT or something.

It used to be that anybody could get in if they paid the tuition, but now there's some bullshit wait-list and you have to have really stellar grades to get in.

So, IDK if the teachers get paid more or not, since tuition is more expensive. I doubt it's still as much as a public school, but surely they must pay teachers with master's and PhD's more than teachers with only bachelor's degrees.

It's kind of funny how some of the smartest kids at that school turned out though. The smartest kids at our school were 1 boy and 1 girl. The boy had gotten a PERFECT score on his SAT's and was invited to go to Harvard at full-price, or Cornell with completely free tuition.

He decided to go to Cornell with the full-scholarship program. He graduates, and then became a history teacher at that very same high school that he graduated from. According to students he taught, he was one of the most hated and despised teachers.

The other girl, one of the most brilliant in the classes, got a 4.3 GPA and a full-scholarship to UC Berkeley (a top 10 school). She dropped out of college, became disillusioned with society and with college, and dropped out of college to become a masseuse instead.

Life is so weird and so strange, isn't it?

You're taking on a great challenge, do everything you can to succeed for your students and yourself. Given how just about everybody is Hispanic, you might want to do a crash course in Spanish.
