Bluing Woodland species (possible P. caerulipes?)
    #20237249 -

Hey guys,

So I'm back at it again, foraging through the forest, eating wild lettuce, red berries, various trees and bark, and I find this little guy. (Please note I am color blind)
So when I saw it, it looked like your average dried LBM. I didn't think much of it, except I saw hints of bluish on the cap. I picked it up, and it looked kind of like a Panaeolus, but this was the forest... so probably not. After picking it and examining the bluish cap, I squeezed the stem, and it turned a darker color. I held on to it as I walked a bit, and I noticed it started looking bluish where I bruised the stem. These were found in Eastern Canada (Nova Scotia)

Anyways, here are some shots:

So I could just be crazy, and this might just be a LBM. But here is the WORST part. After noticing the bluing, I decided to keep it, maybe try to rehydrate it and get a spore print, and stick a slice under the ol' microsope, just for fun. When I got home all excited, I went in my pocket and it was GONE! And there was only the one specimen! I went out again today to try and find more, but no luck. F.

But yeah, I'm not claiming these to be caerulipes, might not even psilocybes, but I'm just curious on any input, since there is no specimen, only these sketchy pictures. I will be out daily looking for more, unless someone here points me in a direction of non interesting mushrooms. Too bad all mushrooms are interesting!

Thanks for the help guys.

tough call. Try visiting the same spot in the near future for another specimen.

Might be an Entoloma species or a rare quebecensis.TI will chime in soon.

I think its to early for the quebecensis. I always figured they were fall fruiting species, but i can't find any info right now on it. Anyone know?

i think it's an Entoloma.
i do think you should revisit the location though...

all of the observations of Psilocybe quebecensis on MO, have been found in the fall/winter.

I wish I had the specimen so that I could check out the spores, that would separate psilocybe/entoloma.

Did you have any particular species  of entoloma in mind? mostly the inrolled margin and possible angular spores?
I don't know much about Entoloma, but I'm going to do some reading tonight!

Could be Entoloma incanum / Leptonia incana

http://www.mushroomexpert.com/entoloma_incanum.html

There is apparently a blue staining Entoloma species or two, so it could be one of these.
From reading the description, it states it smells of mice. The smell of this mushroom was the typical mushroomy smell, I didn't notice anything mouse-like or barn-like or anything.

I'm going to be checking out the spot to see if I can come up with another specimen. Hopefully something pops up.

I do not think it is a Psilocybe... The darkening reaction seems to be happening from top to bottom almost, and if it were oxidtation of active compounds, I'd imagine we'd see the heaviest bluing reaction at the stem base.

That spot at the top is where is squeezed in order to check for bruising... which turned out to  be blue :P

But yeah, I'm not too convinced either, Just some bluing LBM for now

Did you find this growing from moss at the bottom of a tree? I usually find blue Entoloma on moss covered oak trees at the base of the tree. The blue was always in the cap and upper stipe on every collection I've found but never bluing from handling.Cool find though keep us posted.

It does look like a Psilocybe, probably a new species.  Please recollect.  A photo with no dried specimen is just a rumor.

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions.

I read a little about this one on Rogers Mushrooms, and it claims it has a distinct fishy/not mushroomy smell, This one had a typical mushroom smell, might be though, who knows.

I'm still thinking Psilocybe fits pretty well, but since there is no specimen (yet, going back out today) we can't tell.

I do not have the habit of eating collections such as these, I still have the eastern baeocystis specimens, dried up and stored, ready to be shipped to Alan, just being a little bitch about sending them.

Heading off to work after my coffee, then a lunch break out in the wilderness for hopefully at least one more specimen, at least that way I can scope it. Wish me luck

Has anyone considered P. graveolens? The mossy habitat has me intrigued... :strokebeard:

I looked at this like 20 times on my phone but now that I see it on a computer it sure looks cool! The stipe does look like it was not blue while in the ground, but did bruise blue after handling because it looks quite blue in the last pic.

We did see P quebecensis from Nova Scotia last year so this is a possibility .

Now Rope, I know I bugged ya earlier, but who the hell finds a blueing specimen and doesn't bring it home to print!!!!!??? :wtf:

Looking forward to finding more!!

Rope can you remember what type of forest cover was around? What tree species? I'm going to try to go hunting today and tomorrow.

Inocybe calamistrata is an edible species with a different stipe texture and color.

I remember last year being cautioned against eating Inocybe calimistrata, what new information is there or what studies have been done?
