Gumby, I definitely agree, those look almost exactly like Weilii. I definitely think there is some kind of mutation which allowed for weilii to grow further north in colder climates as theyre generally located in mountainous regions.
Either that or weilii came down south from the Appalachians... Either way, NICE FINDS AND GREAT PICTURES.

Beautiful pictures, I'm definitely going hunting . Thank you for including the habitat and the pictures of it as well.
Japanese Knotwood seems too grow rather abundantly in West Virginia and Virginia if I'm not mistaken.

Maybe we can do another gathering sometime, but as MJ mentioned, you could probably find these in Michigan.
-------------------
I found a new location yesterday. It seems bluefoot is less picky about the size of the stream it inhabits than I had originally thought. These were found under Japanesse Knot-weed in the low flood plane of the Ohio River. You can read about the details here.

The Ohio Valley is just crawling with Bluefoot!
A few days ago I went out to collect specimens to send to Dr. Guzman. He wants three collections from different areas so I thought I might save some gas and time by searching close to home. So I went down by the river, near a bridge in an urban area, and sure enough, Bluefoot was there. There were huge debris piles filled with garbage down there and bluefoot was growing in with the garbage. Under a top canopy of silver maple and a low canopy of Japanese Knot weed.

Psilocybe caerulipes can blend in with it's environment quite well, making them difficult to spot, especially when they are wet.
I also found these other mushrooms in that area.
 Some beat-ass morels
 Some Orange Mycenas
These were growing from a wound in a Silver Maple. Coprinus I think.
 A nice cluster of Pholiotas.
I also stopped by the Ohio River Islands National Wildlife Refuge to collect a few samples (that thread will be updated shortly). And I went back to the state forest where falcon, eris, Jim, AsianYumYum, LLamabox, and I hunted last Saturday.
That place was loaded with shrooms, allot more than last Saturday. I even found some growing from a moss covered log.

I have now found Bluefoot in six of eight locations checked since the season began in mid April. These are VERY common this year.

Awesome, glad to hear there is more this week than last, as I live northeast of you right near a river with flood areas with piles of dead trees, knotweeds, and debris. A little warm weather and I think they'll start popping around here, it has been raining all week.
Thanks for updating, you take great pics.

I took psilotastic on a guided hunt today and the Bluefoot were out in force.
Some of them are getting ridiculously big.

We were also fortunate enough to find this beautiful cluster next to a robin egg. Falcon posted a picture of this egg from the gathering last week, when there was but a single pin beside it. By today the patch had flushed out nicely.

On the way home I saw a familiar looking van parked next to one of my best spots. Look who was lurking around the woods there.

Good times.

Whoa, I remember that egg. Crazy that a big patch is there now.
Nice pics
I guess the egg isn't going to hatch.
Did you run into Jim out there with Shroomism? He said he was going back out there some time on aim.

No, I didn't see Jim. Shroomism said that Jim ate some caps and wandered off into the woods. I hope he is alright. They were not at the state forest where we all hunted, but at the other location, the "patch of thousands", where the cop stopped us. Hopefully they made it out of there OK.
I had other engagements, so I couldn't stick around, but it was nice to meet shroomism.

They grow in the flood planes of rivers and streams. These have been successfully cultivated indoors . I have prints. Just send me a PM if you want one.

Looks like many people are still finding these with possibly many more on the way with the same questions of when do they occur and what do they look like and where.....who really dont look far back in the posts...
Psilocybin mushrooms are saprophytes.....they grow on dead plant material. Many thrive after ecological catastrophes . Landslides, floods, hurricanes , all create supportive habitats for many Psilocybe mushrooms. This peculiar affection for disturbed habitats enables them to travel following streams and debris . Disturbed habitats appear suddenly-----often cataclysmically. Unless the habitat is undergoing a major seasonal re-disturbance, the resident mushrooms will move on in a few years. Disturbed habitats will evolve, and support fewer saprophytic mushrooms as the resources are consumed. Hence, the first two years tend to be the most prolific, with the third year declining . and after four or five years, the habitats virtually expire. If new debris is introduced however, or if the soils are upturned, these habitats can rebound with additional populations of Psilocybes. These habitats are created from flooding rivers . Swollen rivers erode away soils, trees, and just about anything else in their path. The alluvial plains they create are characteristically high in sandy silt and an abundance of scattered, broken wood fragments which characterizes this habitat. Tangled root balls of trees collect debris as the high waters resede. Deciduous trees such as Cottonwoods (Populus), Alders (Alnus), and / or Willows (Salix) predominate, and also occuring are Box Elder (Acer negundo), Sweet Gum ( Liquidamber), Hornbeams (Carpinus) and similiar trees thriving in moist soils along streams with assorted understories of grasses and brushes. These areas are fairly open, so are fairly sunny. Many of the species in the riparian zones will also grow in disturbed habitats. Psilocybe caerulipes grows solitary or cespitose in deciduous forests interspersed with American Beech (Fagus grandiflora). on hardwood slash and debris and on or about decaying hardwood logs (particularly Birch (Betula), Beech (Fagus), and Maple (Acer), especially along river systems . Growing in the spring to fall after warm rains. However Psilocybes are generally rare in these habitats except deciduous woodlands devastated by recuuring cataclysms which tend to be better habitats for Psilocybin fungi than those in stasis. It is widely distributed east of the great plains, throughout the Midwestern and Eastern United States. Although widely distributed Ps. caerulipes is not found frequently. However in woodlands where it is known fruitings tend to persisit for years..... Psilocybe azurescens and Psilocybe quebecsensis are also examples of psilocybin mushrooms found in riparian zones. Psilocybe Weilii was first reported in Georgia after hurricane Opal swept through in 1995....
these are based on observations made by Stamets on the occurence of these types of mushrooms and their habitats from many, many years ago.....

Over the Thanksgiving weekend I decided to check on one of my Bluefoot patches.I was not expecting to find anything, but to my surprise I found this single specimen. These things do occasionally fruit in the fall.

You can really see the blue on it as it is drying out.

As I have mentioned before, I'm working on a paper about this mushroom, and finding a Fall fruiting in the wild, even if it is only a single specimen, is significant. We are still waiting for Dr. Guzman to give us a name for this thing, but Dr. Gartz has completed his chemical analysis, and the SEM photos from Dr. Prakitsin should be here any day now.
I will update this thread as new information becomes available.

WOW very awesome, I just about gave up hunting, tho I seen a dead tree that was LOADED with big yellow/orange mushrooms that I planned to check out again, but it's right down the street from an Army facility that has been polluting the area for years so I haven't had the ambition to really go back(yesterday--will today on my way to school tho probably) just to look at mushrooms that are probably loaded with mercury, as I won't chance eating them around a GOVT facility that has been giving cancer for years.
I'm definately going to get back out in the woods and see if the caerulipes might be out, as it has been raining a lot lately(tho the rivers just got flooded again so the debris is moved all around again ) and I'm not totally convinced that they don't grow around here, as the Morel season was a complete washout; only seen one person in my local myc club say they found morels this spring, and I remember you finding them(ps caerulipes) during morel season.
Again awesome find, thanks for taking the time to share with us
