Do Americans envy the European lifestyle? * 3

I've never been to Europe but everyone I know who has been there always has really good things to say about the lifestyles that most people lead there. Of course there are many different European cultures, but overall there seems to be some values that stand out in comparison to the USA.

Seems people place a higher value on family time and free time in general. Seems they get longer maternity leaves, MUCH more vacation time. Also it seems there is much more of a protective social network in regards to helping the needy, helping rather than incarcerating people with drug problems. Also they seem to have nice dynamic urban centers with good public transportation and stuff.

How many Americans envy the European lifestyle?

One of my biggest criticisms of USA culture is that we were basically founded by puritans and that has left a permanent stain on any real concepts of freedom that we aspire to. Must work hard and not have fun.

I get 6 weeks of vacation time, I also get bonus days that would give me 10
weeks of vacation time per year. I can also sell the bonus time back to the
company for a decent chunk of change to spend on my vacation

what is there for me to envy if in a couple of years I've accrued enough
time for 3-4 months of vacation time as well as the pay and spending cash

if anyone should be envied, it's mexicans, they get a siesta after lunch in
addition to all that leisure time through the day and they get free health
care on the US dime in addition to a travel package that pays them better
than staying home

True but not all Americans are in as fortunate a situation as you are. I think it would be safe to say that in general Western Europeans enjoy much more leisure time than we do here in the US.

yeah I'm not really following statistics with my generalizations. I'm basing it more on Europeans I've met and talked with. When traveling internationally, I meet many Europeans. They often seem genuinely surprised when I tell them that many US citizens only get one or two weeks of vacation per year.

Of course people that I meet traveling in foreign countries may not be an entirely accurate representation I realize.
