Why is it called "tripping"?
    #20132781 -

Why is it called tripping? is it called tripping just to brush it off like you're just tripping to cover up the fact that it is something far beyond "tripping"? Why I bring this up is because I noticed a couple years ago when I was first getting into psychedelics I was just in it to "trip". And that's all they'd be for, just a trip. I'd do it for the trippy shit! The visuals and what not, I just wanted to see some cool shit. Cause that's all I thought of at the time, that I was just "tripping" on drugs.

Well I began tripping mass and I just loved it, there was something about it that kept bringing me back to it. Eventually I started thinking very deep about existence, life and death, and a bunch of crazy shit while I was tripping. I started gaining knowledge. I started getting into all kinds of things like the ego, soul, consciousness, god, opening my mind, meditation, you know.. that stuff.
Anyways the last couple trips i've went into them in tune with my self, already in a higher conscience mind state entering the "trip". I knew my self all to well at this point.

I noticed I had an internal battle between good and bad on the come up, ego vs soul balancing out. I reviewed my life for what it was and my relationships with people and it was a lot of bad things that I didn't want to see. So i'd try to push it away and deny it and not take responsibility and waves of negativity would rush over me, but as soon as i would take responsibility and accept it and make an effort to change everything would go back to being good. I had to accept what was and be fine or fight it off and go into a "bad trip". Anyways back to the topic of Why is it called "tripping".

I noticed that this trip was different because I was in tune with my self entering the trip and what not like I said in the last paragraph. I was on an 8th of very potent shrooms. I got the geometric patterns but they were in my visual field only when I would look at a surface like the ground. I wasn't having any wild visuals just everything was enhanced, HD, my head was crystal clear, that's what this trip was a head trip. My thoughts became prominent, my unconscious and subconscious mind flooded into my conscious awareness, but not overwhelming at all I sorted thru them with no trouble. I didn't feel awkward like I did in previous trips and I wasn't massively hallucinating, my mind wasn't clouded, everything wasn't chaotic. It was almost like I wasn't tripping I was just in a really great mood and talkative.

So what i'm trying to say here is if you already have an open mind, you got your ego in check, you know your self well and are in tune with your soul and the rest of the universe and you enter a trip I feel like it's not even really a trip because your already in that trip mind state in a way and everything is crystal clear VS being tuned out, having a big ego, thinking inside the box with a closed mind entering a trip would make everything bad, clouded, confusion and seem chaotic.. What are your thoughts lol.

very personal,
however, my take on psychedelics is that as the mental and sensory resonance builds, the moments become layered, and tripping is the side effect of immersion in a part of the totality that unfolds.
while experiencing more than one interesting idea at the same moment, the perspective is one of richness, every idea seems to have many directions that it can go, while more ideas continue to arise, each with many more real potential branches than normally would loom (waiting to be explored - or not!).

you trip when you take any branch.

(there is a particular sense of tripping when you "surf" and don't trip out - noticing instead the arising of things and the potential 'directions' yet not going off the 'yellow brick road'  - then of course tripping out is where all the trippiness is at.)

you go deeply for some length of time and emerge ("PHEW!") from that trip back to the "headwaters" (aka 'the yellow brick road', aka the middle way)
and know that as fantastic as that trip-out was, it was 'just a tangent', one of many possible (and if you wanted, you could still visit other tangents, because time is magically different, but you think it is more right to just stay in the middle of where everything is arising, safer, more real),

now you are closer to the raging ocean of all things arising and passing away,

and then some piece of 'reality' fascinates and fwooOMm off you go tripping out again, and then you return to the totality of now again.

Each side trip is full of enchanting side branches at every turn itself (fractal creation of yellow brick road branches).

I think for some people the whole experience is one side trip after another and they miss the raging headwaters, and for others they trip with ideas of entanglements of ego and ego-less-ness, and find "ego-loss" at the headwaters where sensory and thought impressions cascade and reverberate richly and they evade side trips as pitfalls of ego-full-ness.

I think it is natural to let oceanic muchness just continue to wash over you as well as to find side trips interesting, it is lovely, Toto, "we are not in Kansas anymore."

BTW,

you know that whole nebulous thing about "I learned on acid..."
going off into some vague aspect of mental agility, and enlightenment...

well, IMO that is the afterglow talking, and during the afterglow (2-3 days) there still is quite a bit of that sense of being able to surf at the crux of sensation and perception without necessarily tripping out on distractions unless you want to(; and is this not essentially that "groove" to which the mystics and yogis allude).

Most of the "I learned on acid" and "I learned on shrooms" anecdotes kind of boil down to not learning exactly:
though it is a volitional behavior that is referenced,
and you re-experience it as if learned (the mental agility thing in the crux of the now) with intent and awareness
- but it has not quite been LEARNED, as in practiced and achieved, found in the ability archive, linked in,
not learned unless you do it daily as a practice - NO.

this agility thing claimed as a thing that was learned is the drug still acting, the baseline not quite yet hit, and the near normal mental state, just slightly still augmented, (i.e. very slightly longer fading signal pulse trains in the brain - like the lowest dose effect -S- on the salvia scale.)

basically, i got this idea from reading a story about a monk who took mass amounts of lsd and wasn't effected by it. Because the monk was already enlightened I guess?

I guess learning would be a bad way to put it because I believe all knowledge is already there to obtain you just have to discover it.

Cow Tipping

Cecil replies:

It appears there really is a rural pastime called cow tipping, which is favored by likkered-up country kiddies with nothing better to do on a Saturday night. (One presumes the sheep were busy.) The cow is easy prey for pranksters since it's one of a number of critters (the horse is another) that sleeps standing up with its knees locked.

I recently discussed the fine points of cow tipping with a reformed ex-tipper named Robin, who had done it (once) as a student. Robin had attended Albion College in Michigan, a school so snooty it's said the students read The Preppie Handbook without realizing it was satirical. Despite their pretensions, however, Albionians were mad for cow tipping.

The usual modus operandi, Robin told me, was to get tanked at some frat party and then drive out with a half dozen of your most brainless friends to some nearby farmer's field. While the rest of the group watched from a safe distance, the two most daring lunatics took off their shoes, climbed over the fence, snuck up on a dozing cow, pushed, and then ran like hell.

Watching a cow tip over apparently is the sort of Zen experience that only those with higher consciousness or a couple six-packs can properly appreciate. Remember that film snippet from the TV show Laugh-In where the guy riding the tiny tricycle suddenly falls over? Same deal. Once down, the cow woke up, got pissed, scrambled up, and rousted out the rest of the herd, resulting in pandemonium. Sounds like a hoot.

Farmers, of course, aren't crazy about cow tipping because the cow might get hurt. There's also a chance one of the idiot students might get killed, so it's not like it's all bad. Happily for the cows, tipping is the sort of thing even the most desperate only feel compelled to do once, and most people never feel compelled to do at all. Obviously the dairy industry's public education program ("Please, No Tipping") has finally paid off.
