Thank you Spacerific, Mr.GuessWork, Brian Jones, misterjingo, and Lion for your responses. All have been taken into account and I'm going to either try out a toastmasters session, or take a community college public speaking class.

Cool. Just so you're informed, some of those public speaking classes aren't great. They're usually okay, but not as good as they could or should be, since the quality depends on the professor, which can be hit or miss, and the class, which is usually a bunch of freshman who are required to be there. I personally would prefer an acting class or a dance class. Since those subjects aren't required, the people in the class are usually taking the subject because they're interested in it, and that makes the environment more enriched and supportive. In those classes people will relate to your fear and might even try to get you to laugh about it. I ended up minoring in dance, in part because the environment was so cool.

The public speaking class will directly address the public speaking fear though. I'd look for one that has older people in it: maybe a late night class. Make sure you use the internet to supplement what you learn in the class. It's a common fear, and there are lots of good tips out there for dealing with it. The class time will be short and lots of it will be used to let people present, so the prof might short you on the good advice and fundamental skills you're seeking. The model is usually to make the students learn through experience, which can be traumatizing as you already know. Definitely do some research on the fundamentals of public speaking and watch examples on youtube or something. You'll be more skilled and better informed than some poor bastard who just gets pushed out on stage, and that will make you more confident in your abilities.

Hey man, I don't actually have any advice for ya. Just wanted to say aye, I'm in your boat.

22 year old male with serious public speaking phobia. Just a couple of weeks ago I avoided showing up for a presentation due to this phobia. I did this all throughout high school a lot too.

I'm sure it affects my social abilities a lot too since I know I have an above average level of anxiety in that regard. Though at least my general social skills get me by. When it comes to public speaking I'm useless.
