A little germ phobia that has shown up again...

Well, this last week has seemed to feel like it's dragged on for atleast a month, and I think I know why. If you guys have ANY information or advice, please let me know. Please.
When I was a kid, I sorta had a little germ phobia. It was with my pokemon cards mostly. I'd wash my hands before I'd touch a single card. Constantly. It was to the point that my hands were dry as hell and cracked. I eventually got out of it without help from a doctor or meds.
Fast foward ten years later...and Im starting to develop the habit again. I think it all started with my roomates. They have sex, ALOT. Annoying whilst trying to compose an essay for class. Basically, they dont wash their hands at all afterwards, and they'll go in the kitchen and grab food and what not.
Im practicaly washing my hands after I handle everything they've touchedwith their dirty hands. Im thinking about seeing a doctor soon about it....but this is making my life much more tedious than it HAS to be. If anyone has any advice or tips, please, it would really be appreciated.
Thanks guys for reading

germaphobia comes from a subconscious acknowledgement that one is engaged in activities that are dirty. Why do you think that gay people are usually neat freaks? are you involved in any dirty business? If so, stop!
but I wouldn't worry about your roommates. Their karma is not yours.
and just because they have sex, doesn't necessarily mean they are dirty. You should be happy for them!

It's to the point where if they touch my cup, and I take a sip...I think of their naughty business being all over the rim of the cup and on my lips.
I know I overanalyze things wayyyy too much. This is going to be rough. Thanks for the words...

This sounds more like a obsessive compulsive disorder rather than a phobia. If a doctor helped you before, ...

No, I never went to a doctor before.
I find that keeping my mind occupied with tasks and chores keeps me normal and level. Smoking also helps too, but Im not ready to become dependant on that to get me through this.
I think I'm still covered under my dad's insurance....

Apply some reason and self discipline to the situation. If necessary, do something to prove to yourself that germs are harmless. Stop washing your hands for a couple days and see if you get sick.

See, it's not that im afraid that I'll get sick. I just feel unclean in a sense.
Thanks for the words though, I was thinking the same thing..I guess I just needed to hear it from someone else

i flirted with this phobia for a while.
it was about meat and of course other people. i wouldn't touch a bag that had meat it in from the grocery store.... i'd make my parents take it in..... and i'd be afraid of the counter it was set on..... and I'd wash my hands every time I took out the trash..... and I'd always watch my parents meat handling and make sure that they washed their hands (but they often DIDN'T which freaked me out) after they used meat....
and like one time my grandpa was making hamburgers then he just randomly went and ate a pickle without cleaning his hands and i flipped out and i was like "how can you do that?" and my grandma went and windexed the things he touched for me....
but i would just get this tingling in my hands because i was so hyperaware of them and thought they were dirty, because certain things I would do would contaminate them.....
and then I couldn't touch most things, I couldn't touch doors or things like that because then I'd have to touch them again after I cleaned.
sometimes I would somehow "swoop" out of the shower to avoid touching something or use a towel to open doors and pretend I was a "secret agent" trying to not leave fingerprints, to try to justify the behavior.
so I mean it was pretty bad...... but I just taught myself not to fear it one day because I knew it was getting irrational. The same way I taught myself not to fear snakes and heights.... but the one thing I could not teach myself not to fear (although right now the fear is fading but it's taken forever) is spiders.... because I was conditioned to suddenly be very afraid of them while playing the game Sim Ant.....
now i have no hygiene, my apartment is a sty.......... i don't wash my hands very much.
-------------------- I am the MacDaddy of Heimlich County, I play it Straight Up Yo! ....I embrace my desire to feel the rhythm, to feel connected enough to step aside and weep like a widow, to feel inspired, to fathom the power, to witness the beauty, to bathe in the fountain, to swing on the spiral of our divinity and still be a human...... Om Namah Shivaya, I tell you What!

Well, I called and made an appointment to see a doctor soon. It's kaiser...so we'll see how THIS goes.
If im prescribed anything, it'll be the first time in my life that I've had to take any special medication...unless you consider tylenol3 special
Im just worried about the side effects...I know paxil is mostly prescribed to ocd victems, and hearing some of the side effects...

Um.. I would tell your roomies to please wash their hands before handling stuff in the kitchen because it's bothering you. That is the simplest course of action. Seems to me like you're just avoiding the problem by not being open about it.

would you agree that taking a pill prescribed by a doctor would be easier than confronting your problems on your own terms?

Um.. I would tell your roomies to please wash their hands before handling stuff in the kitchen because it's bothering you.
This is a completely reasonable request.
Restaurant employees are required to wash their hands after touching their dick when they pee, and piss is sterile. It doesn't seem out of place to ask your roomies to wash their hands before handling anything in the kitchen after sex.
If the problem continues, move.

Confronting the problem is getting this checked out before something serious develops. Wish me luck.

good luck. just please consider, for your own sake... that taking a pill to change the way your mind works, can change your entire personality. understandably, this is what you are probably going for, but as with the rest of life, very few things turn out as expected.
I would suggest seeing a psychologist first and trying to sort it out that way, before going right to medication or whatever the doctor will tell you to do.
