Social phobia or Social Anxiety Disorder
    #8928561 -

I have lots of the symptoms.

*Having persistent but unreasonable fear of a situation that involves unfamiliar people or being judged by others. The fear is that you will be embarrassed or humiliated by something that you say or do.

*Recognizing that your fears are excessive or unreasonable.

*Avoiding social situations that you fear, or enduring them with intense anxiety or distress.

*Worrying about being anxious.

*Feeling very self-conscious in social situations, with symptoms like extreme shyness, stomachache, fast heart rate, dizziness, and crying.

*Having a persistent, intense, and chronic fear of being watched and judged by others.

*Feeling shy and uncomfortable when being watched (giving a presentation, talking in a group, performing at a piano or dance recital).

From wiki: "Many times, prior to the potentially anxiety-provoking social situation, sufferers may deliberate over what could go wrong and how to deal with each unexpected case. After the event, they may have the perception they performed unsatisfactorily. Consequently, they will review anything that may have possibly been abnormal or embarrassing. These thoughts do not just terminate soon after the encounter, but may extend for weeks or longer"

I don't know what I'm going to do.  I've decided to quit pot for a month to see if that helps.  I don't really want medication or psychotherapy, but I may resort to those if I'm not feeling better soon I just feel kinda like crap now.

What do you think?

Pot can definitely be detrimental to one's social anxiety.  Try laying off it for a while and see if your condition improves.  Benzodiazepines might help in the short-term, but they're notoriously addictive and not too healthy for you.  Maybe try taking a few shots of alcohol before interacting at a social situation such as a party until you feel comfortable enough doing it without any pharmacological aids?

The first step may be to accept yourself as an introvert, and become acquainted on what the differences are between introverts and extroverts.

Society in general (and perhaps, by definition) is more suited for extroverted personalities, and this can often make introverts feel, and come across as lacking social worth - which is both a self-fulfilling prophecy, and a nasty mindfuck that's hard to get out of.

Taking small steps is key, but really, you need cover the basic fundamentals:

- do you pay attention to your hygiene?
- do you have low self esteem?

Being an introvert is not a problem - it's having a certain personality.  However, if you answer yes to either of the above questions, then there are underlying issues you need to work out first.

I had this a little while ago, and I realized that the reason I had these sypmtoms wasn't my fault. Alot of my symptoms were the result of un unstable Kundalini Awakening that I went (and am going) through.

The thing you have to realize is that you are around people that negatively judge others, embarrass others, humiliate others, etc., so the opportunity for these kinds of phenomenon is great. The way people act when they get in groups is sheer stupidity and insanity; it's no surprise that an intellectual sane person will not feel right around them.

If you want to continue on with your clique, then maybe quitting drugs is a good thing, but don't do anything for the sake of others. But if you are more interested in your SELF and helping your SELF, then the use of certain drugs in certain contexts is the way to go.

You seem to be making a lot of assumptions about his situation. First of all, the large majority of people aren't like that and believing that they are isn't going to help someone with social anxiety at all. I've got social anxiety and have been dealing with it for a long time. I have a lot of trouble taking social risks...hell..it used to take me 45 minutes to work up the courage to make a normal phone call and when I did I'd still have all the physical symptoms of anxiety. I tried fighting it so hard through sheer mental will power.

As far as I can tell you the best solution is to GET OUTSIDE YOUR OWN HEAD. Get a volunteer job where you have to talk to people. Make commitments that force you to stay busy and around other people. Thinking about the anxiety is itself the biggest contributor to a bout of anxiety or depression. Of course, as an introvert you're going to need down time, just never feel sorry about needing to take this time to yourself and keep your mind busy with books, creative works, cooking, I don't know whatever.

Also seeing a therapist can be very helpful. If you don't want to spend the money (it can be expensive) try to find someone you can talk to about it. There do exist group therapy things where people just talk about it with each other and it might be helpful to just hear that you're not alone on this thing.

Good luck

Paxil can really help with social anxiety. If you can get a short term script for valium and a script for Paxil, you can be in a place in which you can control your anxiety. This is however, simply a cover up for the real issues here. How old are you?

I know how detrimental social anxiety can be to your life, it's extremely important to feel that you can overcome this, you have many tools available to you to deal with how you feel. When it becomes debilitating and you are showing classic avoidance in your behaviour it needs attention.

i have the same problems bro
that wiki quote is my all-the-time thought process in a nutshell.
i turned to drugs
dont be like me

actually i wasnt going to elaborate but think i will.
stimulants in particular greatly help me in social situations
I've pretty much self diagnosed myself with ADHD-PI (predominately inattentive)
"Predominately Inattentive subtype - These children have a hard time staying focused and on task, but rarely are impulsive or hyperactive. They may be forgetful and easily distracted."

I think i read a study that said the brains of PI people are almost always in theta wave mode, which means they can rarely achieve a state of alertness.
if you're the daydreaming type you know what I mean.
read about it here

anyway back on subject, i grew up in school never really "in the moment", I was always daydreaming, thinking of some other time or place in my head. Because of this I'm really slow to make friends. I find it extremely hard to have conversations with people. I just can't stay interested in it long enough. Also being an introvert this made me really shy, which grew into social phobia as I made my way through high school and got to college age, where I am now(dropped out after a semester btw)
recently I've found that stimulants really get me focused and I become MUCH less shy around people when tweaked(lol well fuck who isnt tho) and really any stimulant. I've done a shitload of research and have come up with a bit of a regimen for self medication.

sooooo sorry about the long post and I doubt any of that specifically applies to you but I guess the point I'm trying to get across is it seems to me that social anxiety is less a diorder and more a symptom of something else, possibly something buried deep within you that you have no idea exists.
no one knows you better than you and no one has as much power to fix(thats probly not the right word methinks:rolleyes:) you as you do
do the research about yourself

actually i did nothing but google social anxiety for a few hours one day, thats how I came across the info on ADHD-PI, and how i figured out what drugs were best for me(stay away from drugs if you can tho:thumbup::wink:)

sry again for the long post
just want to help u and anyone as much as i can:)

ive had severe bouts with social anxiety.  its really a strange experience.

sometimes I just take some deep breaths and realize how silly the anxiety is and it melts away instantly.  if you believe in yourself and your right to exist the way you are, potential anxiety situations seem very small and unimportant.  if you feel you're doing your best at something, there's no reason to feel inferior to anybody... hell theres no reason too, anyways.

also, whenever the anxiety feels too intense, I imagine having sex with one of my favorite ex-girlfriends.

Sorry about the super-lagged response; I forgot about this thread.

I never made any assumptions about his situation, I just generalized things, maybe over-generalized.

The solution to this problem largely depends on what he considers is a solution. If he considers being highly preoccupied with socializing a cure, then maybe a therapist will work wonders. But if he wants other more important things, like improvement of the SELF, then yoga, mediation, and proper psychedelic use will do much better, IMO.

I'm very skeptical of anti-depressants. I was on Zoloft for a few months and felt absolutely nothing, I expected that since it is an SSRI, it would be like MDMA. I think that all anti-depressants are placebos, and I think this for many reasons.

They call anti-depressants "drugs", let's take a quick look:

Drug - usually takes effect immediately, and tapers off as it is digested.
Anti-depressants - required to take daily doses, twice a day for two weeks, before any effects are to be felt.

But if these sugar/chalk pills help you, then who am I to say that you shouldn't take them?
