Are social programs causing us to become weaker as a species?
    #19891980 -

As a society we put people on welfare that have health problems that make it hard for them to work. These people are still allowed to reproduce put the genes that may have made them disabled in the first place back into the gene pool. Do you potentially see that this could cause our species to become weaker on a whole?

Will the increase in technology cause cuase humans to be a weaker species physically yet stronger mentally?

I think our social aspects and learning culture is teaching us values that dont truly reflect the natural order.

I had a conversation about abortion not that long ago.
It almost bothers me to say this again, but I think its a weakness.
If people cared about themselves, the kids, about anything, they would first of all take more care and not have sex without the will for the responsibility, which takes the power away from the evolutionary need. Not only that, but sometimes kids are aborted because parents dont want the burden of a potentially disabled child. I can think of quite a few women who have shared fears of this with me and if people werent weak, they would make that decision when the information was concrete, however sad and barbaristic it sounds.

Western cultures are becoming weak where 3rd worlds are thriving on strength.

There are often unexpected genetic combinations that can result in offspring which are superior to their progenitors in some particular aspects. If you can accept this you will realise that the more people our society sustains, and the more diverse that population, the more potential and more interesting are the genetic combinations which become possible.

The alternative is eugenics, or a societal system with little encouragement of compassion. It is always my personal preference to advocate for diversity.

Welfare stems from human compassion, which is an attribute I feel our society is better off embracing.

As a whole, society is perhaps, weakened. Although the methods by which weakness is judged are likely to be arbitrary and non-inclusive. Individually however, with more diverse genetic combinations in the pool, great things are possible.

No, I think this is a misunderstanding of evolution and natural selection.  Natural selection selects traits that are "fit" relative to their fitness landscape.  There is no notion of fitness without a fitness landscape to compare it too.  If a retard is able to propagate in our modern society then those genes are fit, because they have reproduced in the current fitness landscape.

There is no such thing as weaker or stronger in an absolute sense.  Again, its always relative to a particular environment (fitness landscape).  A species is more likely to continue on when it has large genetic diversity because then when the fitness landscape changes its more likely that some members of the species will be able to occupy a niche in the new fitness landscape.

You ever seen the movie "Idiocracy"? That.

Premise of the film is that intelligent people seek education and careers and have fewer to no children and the high school dropout males have a dozen each. Over hundreds of years, average IQ and society has descended into your familiar post-apocalypse. It is a mindless comedy flick, but I found their argument interesting.

I hear what you are saying but if we say lost a billion people we would still have a large genetic pool of 6 billion that is still a large and diverse gene pool.

Diversity doesn't come from numbers alone.  Humans are one of the most genetically homogeneous mammals out there.  If we lose 1/6 of our population at random, then our genetic diversity stays the same.  If a bottleneck event occurs then our diversity would diminish, as it has in the past.  Interestingly, dogs are one of the most genetically diverse mammals.  When such wildly different pressures placed on them for very disparate physical and psychological traits they are of course very genetically heterogeneous.

If we are more genetically homogenized than most other species, wouldn't it make more sense to retain whatever slight differences there are as the path to greater diversity?

Evil or not, I predict it is going to make a major comeback by mid-21st century. Imagine the potential benefits that would be reaped if a responsible enough entity (does not and never will exist) were given some control over reproduction. Only the memory of the holocaust has prevented us from acknowledging the elephant in the room. Nobody need suffer as a result of their genetic makeup. As the biotech revolution starts to pick up steam, as the world continues to overpopulate, I would expect legitimate discussion of forced sterilizations, laws restricting reproductive freedom, and uber-mensch designer babies.

the weakness has been inherent since we began with shelter and clothing (the last 50,000 years or more).

social programs make the inequalities less painful, and that is all they are meant to do.

a person still has to manage their own attitude and self fulfillment.

I look forward to the day, when all eugenicists, can be shot by firing squad.  This will be the responsible thing to do with them.  Let the birds pick them apart afterwards.

"Legitimate discussion? of Forced Sterilizations"
"Laws restricting reproductive freedom"

Line them up, we can discuss it after we kill them all.  Might as well start solving their overpopulation concerns immediately.

Well welfare is pretty assbackwards. It punishes people for finding work and they end up loosing more money in benefits than they get from working. Shit like that doesn't make sense, they need to offer them ways to increase their disposable income and ween them off of welfare. Win-win.

An increase in technology won't mean we'll become weaker as a species, it will mean we become more effective in whatever we want to use that technology for.

There will always be weaker links, and there will always be the ones at the top.

some will get the direct benefit of technology, and just think of the savings in wages.
so the other 99% will need some kind of wellfare during a transition into a completely cultural society that has all the supply chains worked out, and a dependable caste system (for the owners of the supply chains)
