I feel ya passiflora. I am not against taking (shooting) an animal in the wild if it is for food. Efforts should be made to make sure that the hunter has a clean shot with a high likelihood of a single shot, humane kill. It seems unnecessary to hold the deer captive. I suppose if he is growing them as a food source that's one thing, but to keep them captive for ones entertainment seems unreasonable. Deer are heard animals that have a social structure. Your neighbour is compromising happiness.

Don't call the authorities without speaking to him first. If he tells you to go fuck yourself your options are likely pretty limited.

it is actually illegal in Oregon. it's called harassment of wildlife. you're the one who's getting all upset over this. i'd say you're the one with issues. I just noticed something out of the ordinary because the neighborhood cats weren't coming around anymore. I think the deer are killing them.

those deer used to walk through my property every day. they are wild black tail deer. they even go into his greenhouse. if he catches them in there, they'll tear the place up and he'll kill them  for sure. I sure as hell don't want him firing a gun into his field in my direction. hopefully he's not that stupid but he is keeping wild animals fenced in. it's no different than fencing in a mountain lion or a bobcat.

what's really fucked up is that 9 out of 10 people in this thread think it's ok to keep wild animals locked on private property. it would be one fucked up inbred animal husbandry situation if everyone in real life thought they could just trap animals and raise them for themselves. or it's ok for this cop to do but not everyone else with property? sure i'd love to have wild animals of my own in a fantasy reality but that's some fucking ridiculous grizzly adams... disneyfied reality.

and now i'm looking at an imminent rodent explosion and flea/tick problems that go with it. those deer need to move around to keep from getting sick and pest ridden. it's not like he's moving them from pasture to pasture. he's not set up like that. at least they aren't in danger of being hit on the roads and they seem to enjoy the easy life.

OP, if this is against the law and you feel strongly about it, then call the authorities. Don't expect to remain anonymous because neighbors are the first ones anyone would suspect.

Personally, I don't see anything wrong with people raising deer and have known several people who do it, legally. If they're enjoying the easy life, I would personally leave it be. Cats are smart, I doubt that they would end up in an altercation with a deer unless they were in a very confined space. Shit, I grew up in stables with lots of barn cats who managed just find around a shitload of horses - and I've seen those same horses aggressively go after dogs that have come up to them. Deer are even more passive/shy, and I really don't think it's likely the deer are killing the cats.


Personally, I would let it go unless the animals were in any kind of distress, but that's just me.

Well I'm happy to say that the deer family broke free this morning. I saw them yesterday looking for an escape and this morning they're eating the trees in my yard. They weren't getting enough variety in the field. Deer are browsers not grazers. They seem to be loving the apple leaves and hawthorn leaves right now. I do wonder how they finally escaped though.
