Twelve Deer
    #6205631 -

I was chatting with my neighbor recently and he told me that the other day he saw twelve deer in my yard.

Am I blessed, cursed, both or neither?

While I like watching Bambi and The Boys bounding through the woods, the sight of them trampling my plants in their search for the few remaining vegetables they have somehow missed in their routine visits to my yard makes me see red.  :mad2:  What was once one or two or four has now become twelve hungry deer all of whom seem to like to use my yard as a territorial turd drop off point.

I'm thinking DEER FENCE!

Yes!

Many people only see deer on TV. And, they do not always agree with us on what is important as far as land use goes. :frown:

I think Lunar that you are one lucky guy.  :mushroom2:

My neighbor who is an old farmer said "In a hundred years the deer eating your yard won't matter much".

I thought about it and he makes a good point.

Still, next year my garden will be surrounded by a deer fence even as I feed the deer the apples off the ground they would have otherwise had within the fenced area. Land management, indeed...

This is the correct answer. But only if you intend to eat them. Deer are long legged rats. Being from West Virginia, it is a source of constant amusement, and frustration, when people slow waaaay down on the road to look at them. They're everywhere!

Still, killing an animal is not really a justifiable act unless you intend to eat the thing. Killing them for the sake of killing, when other alternatives present themselves, is immoral.

Actually, frustratingly enough, my justification for killing them just to eat them is somewhat failing now, too...still, I think eating them justifies the bloodshed, as it means it's not a waste of life - the deer is then being used to sustain life, which is something of their purpose in the grand scheme of things.

These deer aren't even phased by a BB gun pumped to sting. Actually they finally figure out the pumping noise is followed by that sting so they start to get fidgety when they hear that pumping sound.

As for real killing, I don't know if I could do that. Too much thrashing around and blood followed by a messy butchering and clean up. That's why we have Hormel, Safeway and butchers, to take care of such things. Still, real meat may make that whole killing thing worth it...

Plus killing one deer would not be much help.

deer are one of the most tasty animals out there, if you can take one and get it butchered, it would most definatly be worth it.

not saying that killing one would actually help you, but a freezer full of venison can go a long way. i try to take a deer every year, not just to kill it, but to save money on groceries. you can use venison any way that you would use beef or any other meat, and IMO its better than anything else out there...

just my two cents

The real problem is of course the deer have no natural predators hence end up as rats with legs. Too bad the wolves and mountain lions that would have eaten them are mostly gone because people have killed them.

OK let's assume I get a bow and arrow or even cooler a crossbow and shoot a deer in my yard. How far is it likely to run assuming I nail it where I should? I mean if it runs in the street or a neighbors yard with an arrow sticking out of it's side that could be problematic for me...

If you get it right, it shouldn't get very far at all. A fatal blow will cause it to go down almost right away. 200 yards at most if you get it in the right places. A rifle would be better, but I don't know what kind of living situation you're in.

aim for the lungs, you'll know if you've made a good shot by the blood trail.

pink, bubbly, frothy blood = lung shot. a deer can only run as long as it has air in its lungs.

Well a rifle is out as I live in town so the sheriff and townfolk wouldn't 'xactly like that. Plus being so close to other houses I don't think "almost right away" is going to work with the arrow stuck deer. Cause sooner rather than later someone gonna figuer out just whose arrow that wuzz.

Yes, in town, no rifles. And check your local laws regarding urban arrow hunting. In WV we are allowed to bowhunt in certain seasons in residential areas, believe it or not.
