SPC's Daily(ish) Movie Thread-UPDATE Clock of Omens updates now, you whores

Now, the name is a bit of a lie. I'm going to make this thread, and I'm going to try to get one wt stick, through the great posts, and the lean times

I have three movies today to put out

The first one is a black and white movie from 1940, His Girl Friday. It is my least favorite of the trio, somewhat due to its dated style and dim lighting. The characters were acted decent, though it seemed more like a ply at times with how overblown their acting was. It was the 40 's though, and that was a while ago.
I'm not a person who dislikes old movies either, I loved 400 Blows and Bringing up Baby alot

The second movie, If..., was very very good though. I loved the setting, the camera work, the acting, the story. It was all very great. It focuses on a group of boys at College boarding school, I assume, I was rather high. The main character is an Africa obsessed boy with revolution on his mind and freedom in his heart. He repeatedly listens to this beautiful African drum song throughout the movie, and I found it very moving. There are also small conversations, and strange moments, such as the cafe scene, which was ome of my favorites
This movie would be easy to ruin, but I can't recommend it enough

The final movie we watched was a British monster film, Attack the Block. I am weary of monster movies. If you don't do it right, it becomes silly. Well I wouldn't call the monsters scary, I would say they were very appealing, and not something I would want to deal with. They are almost invisible in the night, except their teeth. The movie centers around a small group of London kids, who all speak pretty decent through their Cockney accents, ad they fight admirably, as opposed to weak horror movie characters who get picked off like nothing. Not to say noone dies, the aliens have some sharp teeth.

I think the one on netflix was a bad transfer or something. I doubt that's how it originally looked. This movie and Bringing up baby were directed by the same guy, had the same lead actor, and were both screwball comedies, so they pretty much had the same style. Acting was different in the 40's, it was more influenced by theater acting and acting in silent movies which had to be more expressive to make up for the distance from the action and the lack of dialogue respectively. Pretty much all movies from this time and before have this kind of acting. I did like Bringing Up Baby more though. Cary Grants character was better and I liked Katherine Hepburn more than Rosalind Russell.

If.... was really good. The shots of the school between sections were really great. England has some great looking buildings. Malcolm McDowell was really good. Here's the music you were talking about. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jIxEPYkXkU8

Attack the Block was really cool. It had good action and it was funny. Good characters and the music was cool. The creatures were really good. Just a fun movie all around, everyone should try to see it.

I can't find a quality version of 'His Girl Friday' any where, which leads me to believe that there aren't any in known existence. I love that movie though.

Burke, that's pretty lame. Yeah, I liked it. When that girl jumped out the window I was like whaat!? That and Bringing Up Baby are the only screwball comedies I've seen, so I need to check out more of those.

Hawks made some great films, but I think he was very prolific, a fair indicator that some of his movies suck. In at least some ways, movies haven't changed a bit ever.

Indeed, IMDB lists 47 directing credits. Some Definitely look better than others. The two I've seen make me want to check out more though.

Yeah, I just checked imdb too; I've seen like 5 or 6 of his movies. 'Scarface' is one i didn't know he directed, that's an excellent movie.

To me, old movies are a whole other flavor of humanity, and it's interesting. I mean, fucking box car jumping hobo-times, the cold war, the lingo, zoot suits!

I guess we'll have more old screwball comedies in the future. I'm down with that.:thousandisland:

DePalma's version was a very loosely adapted remake. I've been reading rumors of another remake for years.

Yeah, scarface is one that I for sure want to see. I figured the DePalma one was a loose remake. I doubt they had chainsaw murders and mountains of coke in the 30's. Also it's like twice as long.

Will have to see the original. I'm not a huge De Palma fan. I mean, Scarface, Carlito's way, and Carrie were alright. My gramma always liked Carrie
I think Hi, Mom! was the one I liked the most. That one made me smile. Casualties of War was pretty good also

I hope the first Scarface is alright, since I havent ever even heard it mentioned, even on movie countdowns on VH1 as a kid.

They had bathtubs of gin in the 30's

De Palma is great. Blow out is one of my favorite moves. Then there is Dressed to Kill, Body Double, Sisters, Casualties of War, plus the ones you mentioned.

Why would they mention Scarface on VH1? I don't think they ever had a 30's movie countdown.

Last night we watched Hud, a movie featuring Paul Newman. Instead of a fun story with wild acting, this was a stark story is very practical and believable. I think  it looks gorgious in black and white too, and to me that helped add to the starkness of the situation.
Despite being the title character, I think Hud's father, Homer was the most sympathetic, if a bit self rightous, and his acting stole it from Newman more then once. I have to admit, he was consistently a favorite part of the movie to me

I thought this movie was really great. The cinematography was beautiful. The acting was all great. Paul Newman killed it, and like you said his dad double killed it. So many great scenes. The first time Hud goes into the maids room and they talk. The scene in the truck when Hud and Lon are driving the dad home after they meet in the diner. The scene in the diner when they get into the fight, and the whole sequence after that at the house. Pretty much every scene from the cows to the end. They just kept piling on the sadness and it was great. At the beginning Hud was just hilariously douchey, but then he kept getting worse. Despite that I still felt bad for him at the end, which goes to show how awesome Paul Newman is.
