Most Disturbing Movie Ever
    #1328989 -

Has anybody ever seen Last House on the Left? It's from 1972 and was directed by Wes Craven. I thought the film as a whole was pretty amateurish. The acting was pretty bad and the plot was well... simple. It's about these two girls that go to a concert but, in an attempt to find drugs they get caught by this group of sick people that rape them, dehumanize them, etc. I don't want to give too much of it away but I thought it was the most disturbing movie I've ever seen. Craven shows practically everything. I think the DVD has a lot more footage than the VHS. He's just out to shock you in this movie. I guess the scariest thing about this movie for me was just being reminded that yes, some people do act this way. Some people will commit the most horrible crime possible against two innocent girls and not feel even an ounce of remorse. I guess it's a remake of a Bergman film called The Virgin Spring. Maybe I'll check that out. I'm sure it's a lot less graphic than the remake.

There are people that will rape you if they can, or kill you for material things, or no reason at all. The FBI estimates that there are currently about 100 "recreational serial killers" at large in the US. Life is is harsher and more disturbing than movies sometimes.

I guess you haven't seen the underground Belgian movie "Man bites dog". A "documentary" about a serial killer.

Quote:
Man Bites Dog is a pseudo-documentary that follows the killing sprees of the murderous Benoit (Benoit Poelvoorde). With cameras rolling, he calmly explains his theories about killing people and weighing down the bodies so they won't float to the surface of whatever river or lake he dumps them in. He then proceeds to slaughter person after person, respecting neither age nor sex nor race, and murdering in a wide variety of ways from strangulation to a bullet to the head. All the while, the film crew trails him, heedless of the danger they put themselves in, and uncaring as they are drawn deeper and deeper into the psychotic, criminal world of their subject.

Any movie with Barbara Streisand in it is far scarier than that.

movies listed are either disturbing on the whole or have rather disturbing highlights (as far as non-self inflicted goes):

vatel - throat stuffing
i spit on your grave - rape rape rape rape rape, creative murders
apocalypse now - throat cuttings
boys don't cry - rape
american history x - ghetto smile
braveheart - diembowling, throat cutting

i've seen a thousand more and I'm sure I could top that list 3 times over but those came to mind.

Never seen "Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom." Looks interesting though.

Debianlinux: I agree with your list, especially "Boys Don't Cry." Great movie but very disturbing due to the rape scene and the very, very unhappy ending.

So has anyone here seen "Last House on the Left"? I'm interested in hearing other peoples' opinions.

To anyone that doesn't know about it, go to www.imdb.com to get information on virtually any movie you can think of.

It was a party being held in some big mansion and at some point this naked chick(pale and sickley, ugly naked) gets all caught in some loom like thing and is held up in the air by hooks or something. Realy wierd stuff.

Baise Moi (Manu and Nadine lose their last tenuous relationship with main-stream society when Manu gets raped and Nadine sees her only friend being shot. After a chance encounter, they embark on an explosive journey of sex and murder. Perhaps as a revenge against men, perhaps as a revolt against bourgeois society, but certainly in a negation - almost joyful in its senseless violence - of all the codes of a society which has excluded, raped and humiliated them. Controversial for its violence and real sex scenes: a vividly nihilist road movie set in France.)

Das Experiment (it made me cheer when they finally started beating the crap out of a nasty person; I find that disturbing)

I have to agree with you GUMMO must have been the most disturbing movie I have seen. Seriously now I had to stop watching it early on in the beginning with the whole cat killing part, i have seen others parts since then and it gets worse. And I am one of those few people who was seriously disturbed after the ring. I don't know why that movie just terribly screwed with my head...

theres just this one particular movie off the top of my head that comes to mind...I forgot the name of it, but its basically about this really shy introverted super-nerdy woman, who works in an office......
and shes always getting harrassed...
sexually....
by her boss...and her coworkers....
and always getting blamed for shit....
that she never did....
and throughout the whole movie....
she has flashbacks of her childhood....
a very surreal, hippyish, sort of "Brady Bunch" style.....
with her dad molesting her in the car....
and one day she goes a bezerk....
and kills off her coworkers....
one bye one....
but she brings their dead bodies to her house with them....
and she keeps them in her basement....
on the couch, and talk with them and has conversations with them...
and even to the point where the dead bodies are rotting and decaying...
skin sloughing off...
maggots and vermin everywhere....
and so on......you get the idea

oh and the move "SEVEN" was also pretty disturbing too

I watched requiem for a dream 3 days ago, and its still stuck in my head. Twisted fucking druggie movie. (BTW: A requiem is a funeral song.) Suddenly last summer is a 60s movie. Damn cool too (its about a really crazy chick and the fucked up things that happened last summer. She was paraded out on this island to attract boys for her homosexual cousin, till they kill him right in front of her) In the mouth if maddness is a mindfuck, and not disturbing in the sense that the above are.Harold and maude is a 70s movie that revolves around this old lady and this 18year old guy obssessed with dying. I liked it : P

I saw "StrangeLand" the other day, it may not have been as fucked up as some of the movies you speak of, but it was pretty damn disturbing.
A couple of chicks meet this guy online, and go to a 'party' at his house. Turns out he likes to torture people by piercing their nads, and other 'bits' and sticking surgical needles through their stomach and chest skin. He also 'sews' their lips shut so they can't scream.

Yep... a good movie if I do say so myself. A little disturbing.

I just saw Gummo for the first time. I thought it was a pretty messed up movie especially the part with the retarded prostitute and the guy pimping her out, that was bad and left an image in my head for a few days. Vulgar disturbed me alot more but its a different sort of disturbing. Strongly recommend Vulgar if your looking for disturbed.

Harold and Maude, disturbing?! OK, the whole death-obsession thing could be kind of disturbing if you're expecting a nice, middle-of-the-road romantic comedy.. and the fact that Harold looks like he's about 14 years old and is getting it on with an 80 year old.. well, umm, that is disturbing actually! But all in all, it's a very beautiful, uplifting (and quite funny) film.
There's this Adam Rifkin movie from the early 90's called the Dark Backward, with Judd Nelson and Bill Paxton in it. It's one of those rare movies I disliked the first time I saw it, and loved it the second time! It's a strange film, a very, very dark comedy, and I think it's quite clever, but it has a couple of bits in it, (I won't say what they involve, you really have to see for yourself!) that are quite close to being some of the most disgusting scenes I have ever witnessed on film. (and I have seen my fair share of gross-out movies and "exploitation" documentaries) I guess the fact that you pick the movie up in the comedy section and it's got a picture of Judd Nelson on the box makes it a whole lot more shocking when you actually see it.

Don't know if this has been said yet:  A Clockwork Orange.

This has got to be one of the most disturbing movies I have ever watched.  My 40 year old friend will not let his 16 year old daughter watch it untill she is 18 because of that brutal rape scene.  It also show's some of the more twisted side of mind maniplulation...

A Clockwork Orange was pretty tame for me. I remember watching it stoned as hell, and I couldn't stop giggling because of the weird combination of violence and classical music.
Baise Moi is a pretty damn violent movie - the rape scenes are fully graphic, showing penetration and everything. It's like a violent porno movie.

I've read a clockwork orange and didn't think it was that disturbing. Anyone seen Event Horizon? I think thats the scariest movie i've seen. Faces of Death is crazy and probably the most disturbing movies ive watched. I couldn't believe my eyes when I watched that and its probably messed up my head. Thats about all I can think of.

Yes Tetsuo Iron Man is a good movie. There's a really weird sex scene if i remember correctly. I actually watched that for a film class I was taking.

Faces of Death is probably the most disturbing thing you can watch. I saw one once when I was 14. Just imagine watching that on acid. My ex-girlfriend was forced to watch it with a past boyfriend while on acid. No wonder she's so fucked in the head.

I guess this forum hasn't been touched in a while but I've been reading it.

Clockwork Orange is awesome but not very disturbing at all, I was tripping the first time I watched it and it became one of my favorites.

The most disturbing movies I've ever seen are Gaspar Noe's three nihilistic films "I stand Alone"
"Irreversible" and "Enter the Void"

I stand alone is about a French butcher on the decent of madness and beats his pregnant wife and has sex with his daughter at the end...

Irreversible has two scenes that might be pretty disturbing but the whole movie is intending to make you puke (even The soundtrack and cinematography purposely nauseating) including a long rape scene and a fire extinguisher to the head about 20 times.

Enter the Void is probably the most thought provoking film of the three, but can be just as disturbing depending on who you are. Almost entirely from the eyes of someone who just died and watches his sister and best friend and how they have been affected by his death, he reincarnated in the end. Awesome flick that looks like an acid trip.

Haven't seen Irreversible but I saw somewhere where Monica Belluci, the lead actress, was so thoroughly disturbed by the content and just simply acting in the scenes that she never watched it once.

Men Behind the Sun (1988)
Hei tai yang 731 (original title)

Japanese troops round up Chinese and Russian prisoners of war and take them to a place called Squadron 731, where they are grotesquely tortured and experimented on to test new biological weapons.

The film is a graphic depiction of the war atrocities committed by the Japanese at Unit 731, the secret biological weapons experimentation unit of the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II. It details the various cruel medical experiments Unit 731 inflicted upon the Chinese and Soviet prisoners towards the end of the war.

Quote:
Men Behind the Sun came out in 1988 well after the boom of exploitation cinema had come and gone. T. F. Mou set out to create a film depicting Japanese war crimes during World War II. He focuses the story on Unit 731 and the grotesque experiments that were performed on Chinese captives by General Shiro Ishii. Among these experiments are letting fleas infected with bubonic plague feast on prisoners, freezing a woman’s arms and then thawing them only to have both of her arms entirely de-gloved, and putting a man in a pressure chamber causing him to release his bowels and intestines. All of these experiments are shown in full throughout the film, there are no cutaways, no fades to black; you just sit and watch it all unfold. What made this film worse than previous exploitation films is that it used footage from an actual autopsy of a young boy who had recently died.

Of course, like other exploitation films, Men Behind the Sun became subject to major controversy across the world. T. F. Mous didn’t intend to make an “exploitation” film, he wanted to create an educational piece to inform the world of what had been done to the Chinese by the Japanese. In Australia the film was banned, in Japan, there was such a backlash that Mous received death threats, and there was numerous criticism for the animal abuse that takes place in the film. Mous has said that the cat killed within the movie by a rat swarm was not actually killed but a blog post from China appeared in 2008 stating that the rats and cat were killed on set. We will probably never really know what went down in the making of Men Behind the Sun but we do know that the actual story of Unit 731 is horrifying.

The real Unit 731 has been shrouded in mystery for decades after most of the records regarding it had been destroyed at the end of the war. But thanks to the Freedom of Information Act, some of that history has become available to the public. Unit 731 was a biological and chemical warfare research facility that performed hideous and lethal experiments on the Chinese during World War II. Officially, the operation was known as the Epidemic Prevention of Water Purification Department and was set up by the Kempeitai military police.

It’s estimated that 250,000 men, women, and children were experimented on and eventually killed either by the experiment or by soldiers under the direction of General Ishii. The project’s code-name was Maruta, a name that T.F. Mous retains in the film, that essentially translated into logs. Most of the experiments were performed on live people to supposedly study the nervous system and how it reacted to various traumas like freezing or extreme pressure. Researchers amputated limbs, removed stomachs, attached the esophagus to intestines, and removed pieces of other organs. These inhuman tests along with a myriad of abhorrent treatments were conducted on Chinese, Russian, English, and American prisoners right up until the end of the war.

Sadly, when it became clear Japan had lost they began destroying much of their data and evidence. Instead of being tried for war crimes, many of the “researchers” involved, including Ishii, were granted immunity by the US in exchange for the data that was collected during the experiments. General Ishii was even employed by the US Government at Fort Detrick in Maryland. He helped created biological and chemical weapons that would later be used in the Korean War.

Good mention.

Philosophy of a Knife was my mention and is about this topic as well. An artistic recreation/documentary about the events that took place at unit 731. The only film Ive personally stopped watching. I have seen a lot of the films in this thread, and Philosophy of a Knife is by far the most fucked up and disturbing of anything Ive ever seen.

I'm a lightweight when it comes to stuff like this. I've seen some scenes/bits & pieces of shit like Cannibal Holocaust and Gummo. It's not my cup of tea to willingly want to be disturbed. I mean even Enter the Void I found relatively/somewhat disturbing and I doubt that comes even close to some of this other shit.

Let's see...I did see Requiem for a Dream. That was so long ago I barely remember anything from it. I saw an early Faces of Death film when I was like 9 years old that honestly kinda fucked me up and stayed with me forever. Also accidentally stumbled into a genuine cartel torture video (I know, not the same thing because it's not a movie) at a boxing message board of all places. That fucked me up, man.

I do want to see Clockwork Orange at some point (I've seen a few scenes from it).

Yeah I heard it was almost like dropping a hidden camera into some backwards/stuck in time, dirt poor, twisted ass white trash town.

The first time I ever knew of its existence was in one of the opening scenes of Belly, a New York hood gansta movie (underrated too), where they go to meet with top dude (played by DMX) and Gummo was playing on in the background.

That's the scene with Gummo playing in the background.

But I did actually for it once to stream on Amazon but it doesn't even exist within their library.

Looks to be only released to DVD like Gummo... wonder what the deal is with Korine's films not being very available

I have trash humpers on DVD, its just a bunch yahoos in masks breaking stuff and making bad jokes. Its not disturbing.

Spring breakers really annoys me for Franco's wigger character and the Skrillex music. Dubstep hasn't aged well.

Worst thing I've seen recently was probably Africa Blood & Guts. A mondo movie just fucking piles of dead elephants being poached, shit like that, its also really racist, I just wanted to scratch it of the list

The baby scene in mother! was fucked.

Sweet Movie (1973)

Jörg Buttgereit's movies like schramm or nekromantik

Watch anything I mention below at your own risk:

I've seen retard -o-tron.
THE MOST DISTURBED PERSON ON PLANET EARTH is way worse. I had to turn it off

"The film was directed, edited, and produced by a person under the pseudonym "Thomas Extreme Cinemagore". (or, in some places, "Thomas Gorecin") It is produced from a number of other video files, largely found on the internet. Contained within the finished film is a sequence of clips loosely labeled as scat, vomit porn, necrophilia, various types of torture, cruelty to animals, unusual people, various types of gore, and various sex scenes, loosely quantified as documentary, mondo film, or shockumentary in a low-budget production in the style of Faces of Death, Traces of Death, or Faces of Gore. The film is listed in the genre of documentary and horror on IMDB.[1]

On poster and cover art, the film is billed as Banned in 131 Countries. Several of the clips from the film, such as "1 Lunatic 1 Ice Pick" and "2 Girls 1 Cup", had risen to notoriety or garnered various amounts of online fame prior to the film's release.

Philosophy of a Knife and Visions of Suffering (directors cut) by Andrey Iskanov which has a scene in it that looks like frighteningly real scene of necrophilia.

Pig (1998) for the up close genital mutilation

Hanger (2009) Story about a hooker who aborts a baby with a coat hanger and throws it into a dumpster, a homeless guy and raises it and names it hanger. it's deformed, speaks in baby talk, and carries around a stuffed rabbit.

Also:

Ebola Syndrome (1996)

Slow Torture Puke Chamber (2010) or anything by Lucifer Valetine

August Underground (2001)

I haven't seen men behind the sun or any of the guinea pig movies

There is absolutely nothing disturbing about a clockwork orange lol.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre is badass and one of the only true horror films IMO... It actually does qualify as disturbing. What's funny tho, is the satire black comedy TCM part 2 is actually more what Tobe Hooper wanted to make with the original. It only turned out the way it did because he didn't have the money to make part 2.

I had The Last House on the Left on blu ray for years and ended up selling it without watching... have been aware of Spit On Your Grave for a long time but never watched. I got really tired of watching extended rape scenes in horror a while back, cus its a basic trope in certain sub-genres and there's a lot of rape in these movies. I was interested in watching the films due to their importance in the genres, but I've had my fill of watching long rapes...

Kinda the same thing with a lot of these "disturbing" movies... I'm not very interested any more in watching stuff if its just a long stream of disgusting acts with nothing else going on. There was a time when I found the idea kind of exciting for its own sake, but its just kind of boring now to sit through 1.5+hrs of that

I prefer actual films with crazy stuff mixed in, something along the lines of Takashi Miike

Also of related interest, Wes Craven said he never watched movies prior to making Last House on the Left due to his upbringing in a very strict religious household. He went to college studying philosophy, also at a very religious school. Last House was the product of a guy brought up super religious, and coming out of a religious college with a philosophy major...

TLDR,

A Serbian film hits is rather emotionally fucked with its grotesque sexual drive
In that regard Salo, 40 days of sodom is more depraved and more honest.

Cannibal holocaust kills animals and almost kills people.

Any graphic pornography you watch is probably honestly more sick than any movie you’ve watched.

The guy unknowingly fucked his infant child to death? That’s fake and sick and all.
The video of a bitch getting caned into tears? Much hotter, much realer. Pick your poisons

Hadn't heard of Philosophy of a Knife, I don't think.. some fucked up shit, and most people are still totally unaware of the Japanese experimentation done during WW2

speaking of GG, the newish documentary that came out on Showtime is really good. Its the opposite of disturbing though - an actual look at GG & family as human beings: GG Allin: All in the Family (2017)

You (everyone) should prob watch philosophy. The "artistic recreation" is very much like a NIN video.. but projecting ultimate violence documentary in a sick and Very creepy style and setting. About halfway thru it shows this woman getting her teeth pulled out one by one.. I had to turn it off.. shit was making me sick. Especially sick knowing it isnt fantasy or imagination. These things really happened to the unfortunate ones held captive at unit 731. History is always the most brutal.

And Im def gunna check out that gg allin shit so thanks for shining that light. Clockwork Orange was shocking when it came out. Now the scenes of "ultraviolence" and the accompanying music just seem  slapstick to me. The political implications of the movie are still interesting.

Blue Velvet was a shocker on first viewing. It's not the most disturbing movie ever, but it's a definite contender for best made disturbing film.
