Everyone has their own preconception of what a hippie or a hipster. This question cannot be answered.

There's no telling how accurate that preconception might be. Some preconceptions certainly must be more accurate than others. :hmm:

Accurate to what? You're own preconception? To the "universal definition" of those words?

My old rule of thumb was, "you're a hipster if you talk about hipsters". I find this to be true.

No, to the practically accurate definition.

Hipsters usually love all drugs, hate the system, dress differently, have tattoos/piercings, like all kinds of weird and different music etc.

Discuss.

I said yes because they are essentially the same thing, but not really for the reasons you say.  Both are ridiculous archetypes which vary widely from person to person.  The things that these groups have in common within themselves and with eachother don't really matter.

Hipster is a word that refers to 1940 subcultures.  You have it backwards.

No, "hipster" is commonly in use today to refer to something completely different from the beat culture. I'm not sure if "modern" hipsters are descended from the beat culture, but hipsters are neither new nor gone.

It just goes to show that the people who use these terms like it says something lack creativity.  Don't be scared of the yoof.  They are the futer.

Yeah... I get the paranoia that the modern term "hipster" was created by actual "hipsters" in some ham-fisted and doomed attempt to trace their cultural misappropriation to the actual culture of the beat generation.

Sam labels himself a hipster.

Jen and Rob label him a hippy.

Dan also labels Sam a hipster.

Sam and rob label Dan a hippy, Jen brands him a hipster, Dan thinks he is neither.

Ranjeet thinks they're all something, but has not worked out a word for it yet.

Calculate the total skin wasted by all parties involved. Show your workings. (6)

The correct answer is more than 2.
