I would say that, if anything, hipster is the broader category and hippies are a subset of that. Modern day hipsters are just the most recent in a long line of popular subcultures.

Hell, no.

Hipsters are "hip" to the various ways of standing out in a crowd and nothing more; there is no hope for personal development or social progress in what they're "hip" to, even though they act on the same impulses as hippies. They are stagnant, and they will never evolve.

Hippies were (and are) "hip" to the social movements that hit the US in the 60's, IE the movements for racial and environmental integration and nonviolence. They gravitate toward these movements out of image concerns, and they may act on their resultant exposure or retreat from it. A failed hippie is either a wook or a goon. A successful hippie is a bona-fide revolutionary. There is no way (that I know of) to predict  the outcome of a hippie.

Hippies and hipsters are certainly related; you might say that a hippie is a kind of hipster, but I disagree with this characterization. Whereas a hipster is all style and no substance, a hippie is a lot of style and a germ of substance. One is dead to the world, but there's hope for the other.

IMO it's more that hippies tend to be more likely to harbor under the self-serving illusion that they're helping the world even when they aren't. Most of the original hippies dropped the ideals as they got older, took straight jobs, and pursued consumerist lifestyles with everyone else.

Modern hipster narcissism is more focused on associating oneself with obscure music and fashions and so on. In a way maybe they're being more upfront about their navel-gazing.

Hell the fuck no. Hippies protested for peace and change, hipsters drink Starbucks and do god knows what else. Hippies brought change and ended a war while spreading love and peace. They stood for something real while hipsters stand for fashion as mainstream attention

I consider myself a hippie. I try to do good things for the world, and I do. But there is a lot I need to work on. I know that. But still, I do what I can. Hipsters seem more about an image imo
