The entheogen theory of religion and mythology

According to the entheogen theory of religion and mythology: religion and mythology is essentially rooted in the experience of intense psychedelic tripping, the world religions and mythologies consist of collections of stories which serve as metaphorical descriptions of psychedelic experiences (in particular the experience of mystical death and rebirth/ressurection/transformation).

This theory fits with the scientific evidence that entheogenic drugs trigger mystical/religious type experiences when they are administered in an appropriately conducive setting (the recent Johns Hopkins psilocybin study concluded this).

It would be interesting to get the shroomery take on this theory, the issue here isnt religious beliefs (such as the belief in God) but rather religious/mystical/transcendent experiences of the kind that people commonly experience under the influence of entheogenic/psychedelic substances.

Religious experiences -  no. Although once I did hallucinate Yeti running around my living room and hiding behind the couch. :lol:
Transcendent experiences - yes, a lot. But I don't want to associate the word religion to that.

Great inquiry and something I am deeply interested in. To me it is quote obvious--without being smug--that it is so that psychedelic substances have held such a sacred place in humankind's imagination since they were first ingested.

I would also though like to introduce about so-called 'mental illness' into this exploration too. Not many people may realize that extreme states of experience which this culture believe are biologically-caused (but I do not and see this as the mental illness myth), like 'schizophrenia', 'psychosis', bi-polar' etc also can take the person into mythical dimensions. I really recommend this book that goes into this. (I will link the Amazon link but really advise people not to buy from Amazon because they treat people that work for them like shit. The ones who go after the orders): Trials of the Visionary Mind

So it tells me that we have natural mythical dimensions to us, and that what has tended to happen for a long long time. since at least Babylon, is mind-controling groups take advantage of this by creating what I call toxic myths. IE I feel that mythology-making is natural part of our story-telling psyche, BUT when manipulated by a predatory mindset that targets our unconscious processes, this actually affects how we view and feel reality, and THAT is the point of why this is done to us. And I hope that this can be explored in this thread, because bringing this to awarness undermines what they do!!

Psychedelics when taken in right set and setting can profoundly undermine this mind control too, but to really help this must needs exploration of mythology on integration, because it is the stories told us--which we then tell ourselves--which manage our perception

A crucially important aspect of the entheogen theory is the role of metaphor, all religious stories and myths (these are basically the same thing as each other) are metaphorical descriptions of psychedelic-state phenomena.

So according to the entheogen theory, Jesus is not a person, but rather a collection of stories that all serve to metaphorically describe the psychedelic trip experience. For example Jesus 'walking on water' is interpreted as an metaphorical reference to the psychedelic perceptual alteration - solid surfaces ripple and undulate like the surface of a liquid, hence 'Jesus walking on water' = tripping balls.

But I think water already is a very trippy medium. When you observe water is is amazing, and it can put me in a trance. This is why water is often used as a metaphor for deep insight such as in Taoism

Right from my first trips on LSD when I was 15 which was real powerful acid in tablet form (I am guessing that the acid then was very close to the real thing what amazed me so much was seeing so-called solid matter ripple and breathe, and this has continued, so now I am wary of psychedelic researchers and even shamanistic traditions emphasizing that only tripping in darkness or with blindfolds on is the 'correct way'. This guy at a facebook posted a video of this dude--looked like a professsor-- emphasizing that tripping in darkness is 'the best way', and quoted shamans saying that tripping in the day is like 'vegetal television'--meant as a put-down. I have nothing against tripping in darkness, and have and do, but hate it when people underestimate observing nature and objects etc.

I think that in fact this way is more feared, because it is a way of seeing through phoniness and mindcontrol. You see body language, and all kinds of stuff which make you question rigid tradition etc it also can be extremely hilarious lol

it is also a way to see the extraordinary magical nature of the natural world
