My dad just said the most disturbing thing to me
    #19725349 -

I love my dad with all my heart and he loves me, my sister and my niece a hundred times more than that.  We're his whole world.  But he just said the most disturbing and cold thing I've ever heard him say.

We got on the subject of making meth because there's ephedrine in NyQuil D.  That led to the subject of drugs and dealing drugs, which is something we never talk about.  Now I know why.  His solution to the drug problem is to lock everyone caught with an ounce of heroin or more up for life.  No chance of parole.  I told him "Well, if you're going to take that stance, you're going to have to be prepared to be okay with me, [my sister] and [my niece] to be locked up for life if we were caught with it".  Fucking guy flat out said he'd be okay with that and that and that we'd basically be dead to him if that happened.  I'm finding myself now seriously questioning how much he loves us.  WTF.

Now he might just be talking big and then if it really happened then he'd change his stance quick.  But I can't believe even in theory that he'd be willing to take that position.  Jesus Christ dude.

Social stigma against drugs, especially heroin, is just insane.  Why are you surprised?  Just because someone's family doesn't mean they're invulnerable against being corrupted by anti-drug propaganda.

Easy to say things like that when it hasn't actually happened yet. Some people are pig headed too and would say shit like that just for he sake of not taking back what they said.

Sorry man, that really sucks. Perhaps my own personal experience will help you to feel a little better. My father, for much of his life harbored the same opinion---'throw all those fucking druggies in jail and forget about them'. He was incredibly dogmatic about the harm that drugs cause individual people and society as a whole. I always felt that if he knew about my occasional usage he would hate me as well. It seemed that his feelings came from this deep place of hatred, but when asked why he felt so strongly he could never really articulate what it was other than 'it's wrong'.

It became apparent to me that these weren't really his views but rather those of the people that propagate that message. Keep in mind that the government, church and mass media for decades have heavily shaped peoples opinions about these things. People, if they don't step back and question what they hear, or god forbid actually challenge it with critical thought or experimentation can end up espousing the same old nonsense (aka hatred). Now for the helpful bit... Over the years my brother and I would make small and quiet, well reasoned arguments about why the anti drug message was borne out of ideology, not fact and how so many really wonderful people experiment with drugs or use drugs to expand their consciousness without harm to themselves or society. I'm not convinced that he excepted this fact until years later when he really started to look around. All of a sudden he finds out that people that he loves and respects use, or have used drugs in the past--doctors, lawyers, bankers, religious folks and the very police that enforce these laws. He begins to realize that they aren't monsters like he has been told these people ought to be (because they have used drugs). So then he starts to question the messages that he has been given.

It has been a real evolution to see his eyes open to this mis-information. I think in my case, convincing my father that drugs, or people that responsibly use them are not monsters or deadbeats really started to gain traction when I made something of myself scholastically. Not that a persons achievements should be used to define their character, but in this case it was central to him changing his opinion. This has literally taken 25 years. Now, although he still hasn't used illegal drugs, he thinks that the nations stance on drug policy is all wrong, and that criminalizing the actions of over 50% of the nation is fundamentally wrong. He also now realizes how arbitrary it is for a nation to criminalize pot (for instance) while taxing and profiting from alcohol. Perhaps trying to understand that he is a product of his conditioning will be helpful in understanding how a man that you love, and who loves you, could harbor such hatred and lack of tolerance.

Your father just doesn't understand drug use, most likely because of how he was raised, media,
etc.. Just forgive, forget, and move on with life. I'm sure he cares, and loves you. At least you
know now not to talk to him about drugs.

That's what I'm hoping is the case.  He knows I smoke marijuana, so maybe he wanted to just make a point in case I had any inclining of a thought to do or sell heroin.  Even at my age, he's still my dad.  But yeah, it's probably another case of he thinks that way until it actually happens.  Then he'd be like every politician who is draconian on drug policy.  When it's his kid, he gives him a pass.

But it's just so weird.  Me with no heroin = most important thing in the world to him.  Me with ounce of heroin = dead to him.  Really?  I don't think there's anything I could do for my mom to even say she'd disown me.  My mom would love me if I were John Wayne Gacy.

i wish i could go back to the good days of taking it recreationally.

those days end after awhile of doing lots of drugs and wound down to using just opiates.

then opiates get expensive and its just heroin.
which is of course the best place to be.

That's great.  You turned him around by setting a great example.  That's what's it's all about.

Yeah, you're right.  His experience with drug use comes from my uncle (and namesake) who was a lifelong junkie, accessory to killing a cop, bank robber, etc. who put a heavy, heavy strain on the family due to his heroin addiction.  That, along with the media's propaganda, made him think this way.

But I want to make it clear.  I think heroin is horrible.  I am not advocating heroin use at all.  I think heroin dealing is fine, but I'm very much against anyone using it.

I'm glad you shared that.  I'm sick of people advocating or even taking lightly, opiate use on The Shroomery.  It's a disgusting drug that will rip through your life and the lives of everyone you know.

Having said that, it's a product that people want/need, so I'm completely fine with people selling it.
