Yeah I was at those shows. I couldn't belive they released them on DVD. During the 80's and some in the 90's you could really tell when Jerry was struggling. You could almost see the monkey on his back and you could definitly hear it in his playing. It still wasn't anywere near as bad as the early 80's. I love Jerry as much as anyone on this planet and when I talk about the bad times i'm not puting the man down. He was only human ,but what he did for us all was trully magical. :heart:

i have found i just dont like those view from the vault tapes, they pick some pretty bad shows generally. and chinacat, i completely agree with you, as does most of the dead-listening community. i type this as i listen to 85-11-02, and the show seems decent, but the vocals seem a little bit weak. nothing like the earlier decades' shows, and definitely a whole lot better than the early 80's shows i've heard. may the four winds blow you safely home...

I don't even have tapes or cd's from the early 80's in my collection, I want to remember Jerry for the many many great years not the few bad ones.

I hear ya Ripple. I got a few from the early 80's including the last St. Stephen and there heartbraking to hear. when I trade I usually just tell folks I want  67-78. :thumbup:

Yes those were the great years, just recently I've been listening to some 90's stuff...."Post Brent of course as I can't listen to his voice" and some good stuff is there as well but I have lots of material in those great years which I have not even heard yet so I'll back burner the 90's for now.

Yeah the late 80's and 90's have some fabulous shows ,but since I was at those shows the recordings awe me less then the 70' and late 60's.

Im in awe of the fact that I was at some of the greatest shows of all time and the only menory I have of it is a tiny piece of some event that happened. I remember so little of the actual music that I saw live, that bums me out a bit.

What I tend to remember is levels of greatness associated with a certain show. I know that in 1977 There was a great show at the War Memorial in Rochester NY! Don't ask me what was played!

I remember a show at the Spectrum in Phil. in 78 where Phil sang on Truckin and that was a treat cause I don't remember seeing him even having a mike before that.

I remember....sorry for the rambling.................

2 nights at the Beacon followed by 3 nights at the Capitol sometimes in 1976 and later that same year a real party at Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City! I made some Hells Angel friends that day and they kept me well oiled!

Man I was a crazy bastard in those days :cool:

Yeah its little fractals of memories. My years on the road seem like a swirling vortex of bits of golden moments. All those special times woven into a tapestry of a life that was beyond description. I feel very Grateful to have been able to see the Dead. Throughout all of history of man I can think of no other place were I would have rather been than in front of Jerry as he opened my heart and lead us to the promised land.
If I die tommorow I will be ok because the Grateful Dead has made my life more rich and full than I ever thought possible. The christians can have their second coming. Nothing will ever touch the spirituality of a Grateful Dead concert. Hell mabye the Dead was the second coming.

One of many memorys- The Jerry garcia Band at the Warfield Theater on Market st. In San Fran. Rainy winter night in San Francisco and only family in attendance. He rocked so fuckin hard. People were ripping their close off and screwing in the balcony. Everybody squirting liquid all over the crowd. The music was so on. You could tell Jerry wasn't even playing that night, he was being played. I remember everybody had tears of joy and as I looked up at Jerry he had tears rolling off his beard and a smile that beamed pure bliss. Just a fuckin incredible night. He played for ever. Then when he was done we poored out on Market st. Everybody was hugging and the energy was incredible. Even the cops were touched by it. They were all smiling and wishing they had been apart of what had just happened inside. We walked all the way up to the haight that night. Hell I had so much energy I could have swam across the pacific ocean. Just one of many memorys I will always cherish.

One more story then i'll shut up.

Red Rocks late 80's- It was a special night. Everybody was dosed to the brink and you could see the energy. Then the band came out and played. Immediatly we all began to dissolve. You could see the sky open up and the divine energy flow down from heaven through the music and link us all to the eternal one. :heart: Then I remember seeing everything dissolve and on the stage there was a swirling vortex. Out of the vortex came a vision of Jesus Christ on the cross. I started crying.(I wasn't a christain or raised as one).  After a few moments the music intensified and Jesus ripped himself free of the spikes holding him to the cross. Then he start twirling and dancing in beautiful synchronisity to the music. Dissolving into the crowd. Swirling through us all and opening our heart chakra's. As I was leaving the show I saw people balling like little kids. People were healed that night. Then I realized that many others had seen the same thing and it wasn't just a hallucination I had.

The Grateful Dead is beyond any religion. On a good night when the conditions were right it allowed people to have direct communion with the divine. We would all melt into one. A giant ball of love pulsating. Melting in the fountian of creation.The children of God, reuniting with god, and for a short time becoming one with God.Having a religous experiance is a life changing event,but having one with thousands of other people is a massive cosmic event that is unmached in all of history. I stop now because it was just beyond words. All I can say is death is going to be fantastic. :heart:

:heart: :eek: :heart:...WOW is all I can say to that chinacat.  Now I am 100% positive that I am living in the wrong time and place.  I can only dream of what all of those wonderful nights must have been like.  I find that every one of your posts, whether it be about the Grateful Dead, LSD, spirituality, or anything for that matter, to be some of the most interesting and enlightening words I have ever heard spoken.  Thank you so very much for posting around here, you are truly an asset to the shroomery.  I have learned many things from you that I would never get to experience if you were not around.  I only wish I could have been around when it was all going down.  Keep on telling as many stories as you can manage, I'm sure everyone would love to hear them all.  On another note, send my love to the Family for their constant dedication over the years, their work is greatly appreciated.  Peace  :heart: :sun: :heart:

Too bad I wasn't there to experience those days.

I was just wondering. Were there ever people who had bad trips at those events? If so, how many, and what did people do to help them?

From time to time someone would freak out a bit but not very often and usually it was short lived. It was not easy to have a bad trip when you were surrounded by so many loving and caring people. Not to mention the sound of jerry's voice and the sounds of his guitar filling the air. Often times you would see people crying but usually they were tears of Joy!

Sometimes people would become overwhelmed by the depth of the music and have a hard time absorbing the shear beauty of what they were experiencing!
