Liberty caps in a forest, a rare find
    #18763551 -

It's a well known rule that liberty caps don't grow in forests, but it seems like this rule doesn't apply to me.
This is the third time in 10 years time I find liberty caps when I'm walking in this habitat. The other times I have found one or two, but this time was a jackpot.

So... I was out walking on a path in a pine forest. There was a clear cut here a few years ago but now it's mostly forest grass, young birch, raspberry bushes and so on... Horses walk by perhaps a couple of times a week.

Liberty caps favourite grass Deschampsia cespitosa is growing at both sides of the path, and since I know this, I look down in the center of the turfs and suddenly spot a white cap. My first thought was Stropharia semiglobata, a much more common find, but when I took a closer look I saw the nipples! :mushroom2:

I found about 7 Deschampsia cespitosa's with mushrooms, one of them was very good as you can see.

Sorry about the bad photo quality, I was only carrying my mobile phone with me.

Nice one Knarkkorven, well there is grass there and if the conditions are right and there are spores around why not? Great ! Not typical though thats for sure.

Myself I have never found them away from animal pasture, although supposedly they grow in thousands on golf courses and playing fields in some places. never been lucky to find them on a man made landscape yet here.

Nice to know that we can keep our eyes out all over the place, maybe they are adapting and evolving to new places ? Lets hope so.

Today I went to the pasture that produced over 1000 liberty caps last year without finding a single one.

Freaky nature!

Great find! Are there any pastures nearby? Two spots I visit annually are connected
by a forest trail very similar to yours, and I have occasionally found the odd one growing
there. I guess the trail is used for guiding the sheep between the pastures.

I had the same experience last year. I discovered a new spot in 2011 that was producing
hilarious amounts in a span of just two weeks, I guess I must have picked more than 2000
in 3 separate forays, still there were loads left. The next year it fruited much later, in good
amounts but nowhere near the previous year.

From what I understand about the life cycle of liberty caps, they need a grass or bunch grass to grow.... Can't recall the details... But as long as there is grass, then pasture, forest, lawn... Seems possible.... I found them once in the grass of a low mountain pass rest area...

A few years ago some one posted on here a great white paper on the life cycle of liberty caps... Was very educational.... Would enjoy reading it again

Not for several kilometers. But as I said, horses walk there. Dung was present further down the path.

200m from a residential area.

It's not this simple. Liberty caps don't grow from every grass species. For example, liberty caps in ordinary lawns is  very rare, like 1 in a 100 lawns or even less. When it happens it's often lawns that used to bee pastures, are located right by a pasture, is fertilized with manure, or is cut with a lawn mower that mows community/company lawns all week long and effectively spread spores.

Over the years I have found that Deschampsia cespitosa is a preferred grass species. And the moss Rhytidiadelphus squarrosus is also highly associated with good habitats, it's almost always present and often mycelia attach directly to it, perhaps as a source of water.

And they keep coming... And one was even sterile, what is the probability of finding a sterile liberty cap in this habitat? I don't think I ever will do it again.

I tend to disagree knarkkorven, liberty caps are quite common to residential lawns, ball fields, graveyards, etc...
At least they are in my region!!

Happy hunting!!

And since the last update I have found two new separate places far from this spot (but same kind of habitat and in Deschampsia cespitosa of course) and one liberty cap in each find.

wolfedawwg: ok. It's the opposite here, almost never in villa lawns, It's so rare I have only witnessed it twice.

I have also few liberty cap spots in forests. All of those have some Deschampsia cespitosa growing near some paths.

That's so cool huh?

I found my first libs ever in a beautiful forest clearing that had some grass along the edges.
The clearing was frequently visited by rabbits because i saw many droppings in between the short grass and the mushrooms

I had one of the best trips of my life on those shrooms. The magical location i found them did the trick i'm sure

Here we go again!

The first documented find for Sweden 2014. Found in the same spot/habitat as last years first find.
I was riding by bike along the forest path and the thunder was roaring in the background as I found them. I dedicate the find to Thor!

26C with high humidity today. It has been very warm the last 2 weeks, but we had a couple of nights with temperatures around 15-16C this week.

3 of the liberty caps was growing in a cluster which is quite unusual.

I watched some video online of someone hunting Lib caps by following deer around.  Apparently, they grow near deer dung. ::shrug::
