Shroomery Unix / Linux geeks come forth.

And tell me, what distribution(s) do you use and why? I like hearing what people are using, and what for.

Gentoo when I am running linux.  currently I dont have a linux box at home anymore because I just don't have a use for it.  I run win 7 on my desktop because its for gaming.

I prefer gentoo because of the extreme customiztion and the way the portage tree works.  I dont have to install one program only to find out that some random dependancy is buried in another programs install code and therefore be forced to install an ENTIRE other program.

An example is this.

Back when I ran redhat a LONG LONG LONG time ago.  I went to install ncftp, a command line ftp client.  I used redhats RPM package manager.  When I went to install it, it decided that buried inside NETSCAPEs packages were some dependancies it NEEDED to function, so therefore my server with no x windows suddenly tried to install X windows, KDE, all the billions of software that goes with it, netscape, etc etc.. all just to install my client.

Now there are ways to fix this with rpm (especially now vs 15 years ago) but gentoo has that sort of control built in and almost automatic.  you tell it in a config file the main pacakges you DO NOT want like, X windows if its a command line only system, and it will auto ignore dependancies related.

Also, you can recompile the entire system from the very core all the way up with a single command to optimize it as muich as possible for your hardware.

Its  power user distro. However it is NOT as noob friendly as alot of others.

I use OS X for my proprietary shit and arch linux as my server.  It's just a very light distro where you get a cleaner install by only choosing what you need.  Other popular distros are more beginner friendly, because you don't necessarily know what you need and want, and having somebody else make those decisions gets you up and running quickly.

Everything is better than it was the last time.  I'm good.

If we could look into each others hearts, and understand the unique challenges each of us faces, I think we would treat each other much more gently, with more love, patience, tolerance, and care.

It takes a lot of courage to go out there and radiate your essence.

I know you scared, you should ask us if we scared too.  If you was there, and we just knew you cared too.

I'm using Ubuntu for desktop, it just werks.
Arch Linux for an IBM Thinkpad, wanted something stripped down and fast, with no GUI.
FreeBSD for my little server, very reliable, ports are useful, ZFS is neato.
I use Mac OS X, for certain stuff.

I have tinkered with OpenBSD, but haven't really put it to use.

It's a neat distro. But they do some wacky stuff sometimes, those Arch guys. Like how they recently decided to move installed binaries to a different directory. If you tried to upgrade it would error out. If you don't upgrade very often, you were probably scratching your head. I was like wtf, is that necessary?

It also took me forever to wrap my head around systemd.

I also like to use Arch Linux. It's great being able to choose what you want installed, helps to keep a clean install. I virtualbox everything though, so I can use Windows, Linux, and OS X at the same time  :intardnet:

Mac OS X  Because I can go totally nix mode and just use a terminal when I code, and I like the UI when it is needed.  Although my older macbook is running Slackware. Idk what the major differences are between distros mainly except for windowing modules and package managers, I almost always never use the UI when I'm in nix mode!

I use slackware on my own computer.  My son likes Windows though, so that's the one we have for common use.

I haven't used many other linux distros, so I don't have much to compare slackware to.  Mainly, I like linux because because it comes with an integrated c-c++ compiler along with maybe a half dozen other programming/scripting languages like python, perl and ruby.  And the compiler is open source, so you can create and distribute your own programs without the annoying MS pop up box warning that the program you are using was created with proprietary software and is subject ot various copyritght laws, etc. etc...

Ubuntu, it's widely used and easy to get into a community of people who will explain the gnome interface as well as using the terminal and of course common explained things such as "are there compatible Ubuntu drivers for my computer if I install over windows"

how to program, how to burn an .iso to a cd etc.

That said, I have high hopes for these guys, this mir and qt transition should be interesting.

For those who like arch for its design of letting you install a minimal system or just the packages you want, gentoo is (or at least was, been a few years since I ran current) does the same thing.

A Debian net install would be pretty close as well.
I run Debian stable on my two laptops, one a thinkpad x220 and the other a macbook pro 2010 model. Debian is my primary operating system, running a mate/cinnamon hybrid desktop environment.
I run Debian for its stability; i hate my computer crashing. I also have expensive mobile broadband and wish to use up as little as possible data on updates. Debian stables updates are usually very small and often none needed. Slackware is also very good in this department, but i have stopped using it.
I'll also add, that Debian gives me the option not use systemd. I used to use Opensuse as well, but it's updates seemed to be consistent and i believe since adopting systemd it's gone down hill a bit.

Go straight to slackware it will give you a workout on the terminal. Or Arch it is probably the closest thing to linux from scratch. Fedora is pretty simple you just have to learn some new commands to install stuff

They are all pretty much the same, with the exception of package management.

I use Ubuntu, Mint, Gentoo, and FreeBsd.

:billymaythumbup:

Recently i built a captive portal out of Turnkey Linux. (ubuntu based).

I used Daloradius, Coovachilli, and Freeradius, and a mix of DD-Wrt's with EOIP tunnels to extend a single guest internet vlan over a multisite wan connected network.

Honk if you dislike Micro$oft... Still have to use it at the workstation, and server level, but we have a lot of linux on the network too. Everything runs in a VMWare virtualization environment.

Cheers.
