micropore tape vs bandaids? whats up?
    #18174078 -

Can I use bandaids instead of micropore tape? Anybody try it? Micropore tape is expensive.

Also. Should I discard the fabric, or cottony part of the bandaid and just keep the sticky part as an g as an exchange vent?

Thanx.

whats a couple more bucks for micropore?
I guess bandaids would possibly work, but id get rid of the padding part,
cuz it will get soaked and stay that way for a while inviting contams to grow on it.
then your inoc points may have either mold or bacteria grow on them, where they could possibly make their way into the jars.

Shoot for micropore man:thumbup:

Its this kind of corner cutting that eventually leads to posts about other issues that arise from being cheap. Just buy the micropore tape, you wont regret spending a little to make a little.

Use micropore tape or polyfill..bandaids let moisture out but let no freshair in..just my exp and opinion..unless your doing brf with verm barrier on top and in that method u dont need micro, poly or stupid bandaids lol!!

I've used bandaids before.

They are more expensive and more tedious/difficult to use than micropore tape. They are hard to remove after leaving on jar lid for a couple weeks and almost always need to be scrubbed off afterwards.

When I read posts like this, I am reminded of all the money I wasted trying to half ass obscure teks that don't work. Its been quite the learning curve. And that curve was extended by me not wanting to invest any money early on.

If you want success, just invest a small amount of money for the proper tools and goods.

If you can't afford the initial40-50 bucks to do PF Tek correctly, then you just shouldn't be growing mushrooms.

I've allotted and accounted for 200$ worth of materiel for my first go nearly all of which I wont have to buy again for my second  (Started off at a 100$ budget, then 150, then I was like, well, fuck it)

To OP, Masking tape is like, 2$ a roll at Home Depot. Nevermind, Don't listen to me.

Masking tape is useless for anything in this hobby except for labeling stuff, for that it works great.

You do not want to use it on your jars because it will seal them, and create a vaccuum when sterilized, which could suck your whole syringe dry upon initial insertion.

Not to mention it will allow for no GE, which is a bad thing, because mycellium needs to breathe.

Micropore tape will work, but not masking tape.

Yeah I put some thought into. Bandaids are sterile, micropore tape isn't. Althought sitting around cutting bandaids up is just opening the door for contams.  Think I'll just end up buying self healing ports. Micropore companies tell you  straight up that the pores are wide enough for bacteria and fungal spores.

I only ever did PFtek once. My first grow. I collected a field sample, spore printed, and used one of those syringes you use to inject food. Pure dumb luck, I got a quarter ounce out of it. I've upgraded everything since then besides my PC. I have a badass PC. Wbs these days.

I don't really like polyfil. Kinda annoying to deal wit and the first time I used it every jar got trich. That's my problem there though. Sure I didn't do it right.

I have  close to 30000 pounds of oak wood I'm gonna stuff full of shitake dows once hurricane season shows up. About to down another big ass oak as well.  Guess I'm way off subject.

Found this post regarding the micropore tape pores. This is 3m which I don't use. I use Johnson and Johnson. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/13642707

I'm paying a lab to do the dow innoc so it should be flawless. Thanks.

'm gonna do polyfil again next batch. I just have a deadline now so I'm gonna stick to what's been working for me.
