MicroPore tape vs. Polyfil 2

So I am doing a monotub, and instead of the normal polyfil holes that people use, I am planning on using micropore tape instead. How would this compare to the polyfil. I have access to both but I think the tape is easier to work with.
And it goes beyond that aswell... I have two types of micropore tape. One is the common 3m paper tape that comes on a dispenser, like scotch tape, and the other is a heavier duty grade tape that appears to be cloth-like and is used for banadages.
I can use which ever works best at filtering and maintaining humidity.
Thanks for the advice.

You can also cut a square piece of tyvek a bit larger than the round tub holes. Then, pin hole or paper punch the tyvek in rows, and cover the hole row with micropore paper tape. Then, use clear packing tape to secure the tyvek edges over the tub holes. Sounds complicated, but isn't. Results are sturdy, and the best of both worlds.

so you are saying tyvek, with holes in the tyvek, that are covered by the micropore.?. and the tyvek held in place with packing tape, on the outside.?.
interesting.
just a thought? or seen it done?

Sounds good... but I dont have any tyvek on me. I know its not too hard to get but I'd rather make due with what I have. I know at the very least polyfil will do the job.
And the cloth-like tape might not be cloth. Its probably nylon or something of the likes. Here is a link: http://www.desertmedicalessentials.com/product_info.php?products_id=95

I have seen it done, for another gas/air exchange purpose. It worked well.
Tyvek is not as porous, as micropore tape. Tyvek holds in more moisture. Micropore allows more FAE.
The two combined, are better than either alone.

I'm using 3M micropore tape on my jars right now, and I would describe it as being more like cloth than paper. What is the drawback to this type of tape? I had just assumed that all "micropore" tape was the same.

all micropore tape is the same.
just different sizes
only one company makes micropore, 3M.
Nexcare sells it retail, but labels it as micropore.
there are many other 3M tapes that are not micropore, http://www.3m.com/intl/lk/healthcare/surgicalandmedical_3m_sl.jhtml
specifically, micropore or... nexcare gentle paper tape (blue packaging) is what you want.
it works great.

If you did micropore over Tyvek I'd be leary of the air exchange, obviously the holes are big enough to allow for it in the original design. If you do this I'd think of opening it and fanning+misting daily.

I can't recall where I'd specifically seen reference -- I'll find it later this evening if I can -- but a couple of people had mentioned insufficient air exchange w/ micropore tape.
I'm currently devising an experimental procedure for testing the FAE of a number of monotub (and possibly doubletub) layouts. The current plans involve utilisation of smoke bomb or dry ice (whichever is easiest to come by and gives the most realistic simulation of CO2 vs. O) against Poly-fil and micropore tape in a number of layouts (O holes directly above CO2 holes, O holes diagonal to CO2 holes, holes on vertical vs. horizontal sides of tub, etc). I'm also hoping to have some extra cash to test a PVC drainage system for the base of tubs to eliminate excessive moisture problems that might involve a brake testing vacuum pump. Ideally this latter system could also allow for CO2 to be drawn directly through/below the substrate once water has been irrigated.
Not trying to hijack the thread -- just giving a shout out for similar concerns. PM me if you have other setups you'd like tested and I'll repost all of the idea in a new thread when I have the extra tubs available. Here's to hopefully never having to fan again.
